I think my drive is pretty slow when it comes to ripping discs to my harddrive. Does 50 minutes sound about right for ripping one 7gb disc to my harddrive?

Have you tried updating the firmware?

It took me about the same time to rip a 4gb dvd! I reckon it was the options I chose so I have to review those options again. I tried backing up a dvd last weekend and it would not play on my Sony DVD player but when I tested the backup on other dvd players, it worked. So I tried different options (using DVD Shrink) and although it took a long time (80 mins in total!), it worked. 80 mins is nuts I know so I'll have to review the options as I said. I've also been looking at updating the firmware. NEC have released an update but it has nothing to do with speed I think. I think it's more to do with DVD brand compatibilty. I know there's a firmware update out there (can't think of the name of it) that'll make burning speeds faster but it also reduces the lifespan of your drive. Hmm, decisions, decisions. BTW, my drive is also the NEC ND-2500A.

Sounds slow. Would have expected about half that. What software you using?

are you compressing it at the same time or are you literally just ripping it?

i was using DVD Decryptor to rip straight to my HD, where i then either put it through DVDShrink or DVD Rebuilder depending on how much compression i have to apply.

I'm still looking into it. I grabbed a hacked firmware, and it seems to have speeded up the ripping, but i'm still not even reaching half the speed the drive is rated for.

I used the new 107 firmware version which removes the rip limit which is set at 5x.
Not it goes up to 7 speed and takes about 15 mins for 8 gigs.

Sorry for going OT, but instead of starting a new thread, how safe/unsafe is it to flash the firmware? I've currently got firmware version 1.06

(I hear there is dual layer firmware for this drive which makes it an ND2510A though probably dodgy at this early stage)

its pretty safe, and its possibly to recover from a bad flash with not too much difficulty.

As for flashing it to dual=-layer, theres no point. Its not as if you can even get the media yet, and when you do, its gonna cost an arm and both legs per disc. So i don't see the point in doing it yet.
