I was trying to hold this back but I cant help myself..

I was in the Compustore "Superstore" in the Sandyford Industrial estate. I was unfortunate to be in need of a floppy drive and the "Superstore" is a 10 minute walk. God what a tragic waste of space!!! The shop was half empty, the stock was shockingly out of date and the prices for this out of date stock were horendous..

A Creative GeForce Ti4600, brand spanking new for €299 and the Ti4200 for €199 or something... The prices of games were equally bad, the Creatures Island add on for Black and White (4 years old now?) was 44.95 and 007 Nightfire was 54.95... A full version of XP home is over 300 euro...

How have they been getting away with it for so long??? I noticed the store in Dundalk closed recently too, I wonder is it just a coincidence that PcWorld opened recently too!!

At least they have competition in Dublin, there's fuck-all competition for them in Cork and their prices are as bad ..... thank god for online retailers

I've been to that store up in Sandyford Industrial Estate. Thats place looks like the dump. Almost looks like they are going out of business :)

Who is actually running this company?? Do they not see whats going on around them and maybe consider reacting to it!! They seem to set up in places with no competition! No where is safe from e-tailers though :):):)

Yeah its funny how they can run a company like that. I guess they make money from people who dont know that they are selling way way more than anywhere else. Most companies would probably some things from them as well I guess.

to add to the soundstore/compustore bitching thread but on a non-computer related matter...

My dishwasher has been busted now for the best part of 2 and a half months. We contacted them and they sent a plumber a few days later. Four visits later and the idiot still hasnt managed to fix it. Several complaints to soundstore and nothing. Finally rang them again about 2 days ago and they said "err, we'll contact the manufacturer". Surprise surprise, nothing back from them. Time to go up on Monday morning and demand a replacement.

I honestly don't know how anyone that does business like this is still in business!

Going back 2 or 3 years ago I was speaking to a guy in the Cork shop about getting ISDN.

Apparently according to him I needed to buy a Trust 56k modem from him to connect to it :D

wasn't that PC Superstore that closed? I'm sure I passed Soundstore/Compustore on Oliver Plunket St today <unless I was hallucinating, that is>
There is nowhere anymore in Cork for that urgent need to get a hard drive right there and then <unless of course you have more money than sense>:D

Compustore in Letterkenny are doing thriving business sadly. Can't help noticing that no-one's bought that excellent offer of a creative 12mb Voodoo 2 for a mere €199. I remember I contemplated buying it back in 1998...

Also, does anyone know of a shop that sells extended warrantys on MP3 players and the like?

In Cork , is there not a pc store/repair/upgrade shop by the canal over the bridge by the RTE studios and Alfa Romeo/Fiat Garage ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,680 ✭✭✭Tellox

The one in Waterford is the worst of them all. They're selling off a RIVA TNT2 for €200. Unsuprisingly, it hasnt budged. And one of them in there once told me that I needed more RAM if I wanted a faster connection speed. How in the **** did that even enter his head?

They keep their prices about the same as Compustore i.e. insane .... big shop, range of goods on sale is crap and also stocks products that are well over their sell by date and charges bleeding edge prices for em .... in a word, they might as well call themselves compustore as well

Cork Computer Clinic, the prices there are crazy. I needed a few network cables urgently a few months back. They wanted to charge me €60 for about €20 worth of stuff. I told them where to go.

    PC World can be as bad, 3.0 P4 HT 533FSB - €700...AMD 3200+ is €330

you just have to face facts that you cannot get anything for a decent price in shops in Ireland. Until people realise this and start using online stores to get their products (music, DVD's, games, computers & components etc) instead of using the "offline" stores, the prices will remain stupidly high.

Probably another of their ancient "Managers Specials" - no box, manual, power cables, accessories and usually cracked/broken into tiny pieces. BUT they give you a whole 10-15% off. How kind of them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,478 ✭✭✭tribble

Nobody forces anyone to buy there folks, while we have all had our share of muppets in all retail stores the fact remains that the general population don't know their arse from their elbow and NEED help buying PC's.

'course this whole thread is dedicated to my employer :)

    Managers Specials

yeah, in fairness the managers specials are a bit of a joke.
Problem stems from the fact that a manager is reluctant to drop the price below the initial cost price on the system. It looks bad on the system.
But it depends on the manager, some just want rid of the junk.

In fairness, I considered starting a business somewhat akin to Compustore one time, but when you factor in the cost of running a shop, paying staff, etc., your prices are always going to have to be VASTLY beyond what Komplett / Overclockers and the like can offer. Its impossible.
