HDD knackered?

I'm back on my old computer ( :dunno: ) because my other computer is refusing to boot. It gets to "Verifying DMI (DMA??) something something" and then sits there. After a while I got an error message along the lines "Read-disc error. Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot"
It was one of the last eBay items I've not replaced (like my RAM, MB and GFX card...only CPU left...I hope that's OK!) so methinks it's knackered.
Any recommendations for HDD's? I'll either get it online, or if there's not much of a price difference (yeah right) offline...0
