    Hi all,
I setup my digibox for mulitroom viewing, my main tv where the digibox is located is fine, the sound is stereo. But the sound on the other tv's around the house is mono on the selected digital channel, the basic tv channels are fine all received in stereo. Im using the output on the digibox to send the signal. Any suggestions on fixing this problem?

    Thanx in advance

    hanloka

The SCART output is stereo, the rf is mono. If you need stereo in other rooms get a videosender.

Indeed any DVD or VHS playback will exhibit the same. No-one includes a NICAM encoder with their RF modulator.

Some Continental PAL systems do use two FM subcarriers to do TV stereo, but UK /IRL all analog TV stereo is via DIGITAL Nicam.

No VHS records or replays NICAM either. The VHS tuner decodes the NICAM and it is recorded in "hifi" helical FM format, only replay in stereo via SCART, DIN or RCA connectors.

Re: No Nicam encoder - is this a technical or licencing problem ?

Is there much more to the encoding than using a lookup table to convert the 16 bit digital sound to a 12 bit one (esp. since DVD and SKY are digital to start with) ?

Since the strength of the NICAM signal is so much lower than the video/audio signals there should not be any problems like needing more bandwidth on the units output.

Pity - since NICAM is not exactly new technology , BBC using it internally for yonks.

You could just run another pair of long coax cables for the left and right sound.

I would have thought it is just a money thing, the cost of a NICAM encoder would outweigh the demand for one in consumer equipment.
