Have been very happy using Firefox for quite some time now - like the speed and love the tabs :)

Unfortunately, recently it has grinded to a halt for some sites, boards.ie amongst them. IE6 loads same page at same time very quickly. Here's the detail:

I type in www.boards.ie into browser and hit enter. Sure enough, boards.ie loads in a fraction of a second. Then when I click any link directly or open in new tab, I get the boards.ie bulletin board logo on the left top of the page immediately and in the status bar on the bottom left it says "transferring data from boards.ie...". The site stays like that for something like 30-60 seconds and eventually loads :(

This always happens, does not depend on time of day or anything like that

Have fast PC, plenty memory, xp fully patched and 1Mbit super steady broadband connection and like I said, IE6 is fine with exactly the same site at exactly the same time

Anybody any ideas? Help greatly appreciated :)

P.S. Clearing the cache makes no difference

you will have to create user.js file in your mozilla profile folder and write the scripts in!

your mozilla folder is located in:

X:\Documents and Settings\unkel\Application Data\Phoenix\Profiles\default\some random number and letters

You can also edit them if you type about:config in the address bar

    Speed up page rendering

By default, Firefox doesn't try to render a web page for 250 milliseconds, because it's waiting for data. If you add the code below to your user.js file, Firefox immediately tries to render the page, even without complete data. The drawback is on slower machines where doing a "reflow" may actually cause the total page load time to be longer.

Pipelining is an experimental feature, designed to improve page-load performance, that is unfortunately not well supported by some web servers and proxies.

If you've got any extensions on, try unloading them and see if it helps.

Ah yes, CyberGhost, I remember now I had added that in the user.js file last week, but it didn't make any difference. Only thing is, I created this file and put it in my C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile directory as I picked up somewhere on the web as a tip. This seems to be the correct place. There is no phoenix directory on my harddisk. There is nothing else but that in my user.js file now

Thanks for the help guys :)
    Any more suggestions?

Just completely uninstalled Firefox (uninstall, remove directory and shortcuts, remove relevant keys in registry) and reinstalled. Makes no difference with or without the user.js file

    Surely someone has another idea?

Will try whatever you suggest - short of reformat :)

unkel, it didn't work because you placed it in the wrong place!

there IS a phoenix directory! it's just hidden! enable to show hidden files and folders in explorer options

X:\Documents and Settings\your computer username\Application Data\Phoenix\Profiles\default\some random number and letters

X: = letter of your drive(C: by default)

Duffman did it and he is happy :)

CyberGhost, thanks for that excellent link

you are correct of course, that directory exists. Always have show hidden files on so dunno why I missed it yesterday :o

Have placed my user.js in the random name directory, rebooted, but problem not solved...

In fact it's only worse now, cause I had a look at your link and enabled tab extensions and configured it exactly like I wanted it, but now I can't really use it

    Any more suggestions?

Funny thing is, there is no delay for most sites, just for some - boards.ie included

The delay is about 60 seconds, rendering Firefox useless to me :(

Try adding a proxy server, just a thought, it might be a DNS problem instead. If your ISP has one, that's what you should use, otherwise you can try proxy.como.socket.net:8080 which might still work.

Alternatively if Firefox is already running on a proxy, try removing it.

Civilian_Target, you're a genius - I put in NTL proxy and it works

Thanks a million everyone, I'm delighted I can use Firefox again :D

It wasn't firefox's fault, it was NTLs, this has happened to me to. NTL use a transparant webcache, but they rarely test it under anything but Windows/IE, so Linux/Firebird users get the blunt end of the stick. They'v e broken my compatibilty twice since September. Fortunatley, if you ever have problems with NTL stuff, help is at hand.

Check out www.nthellworld.co.uk , those guys have all the answers.
