HDD is on the blink :(

Right, my HDD has been very sluggish lately (last 6 months), due to constant restarts owing to a badly dust clogged HSF.

Previously whenever I tried to run scandisk (after I noticed icons dissapearing), about half-way through checking the folders I would get an error saying that windows doesnt have sufficent memory to continue the task. I put this down to the fact that there was only 64mb installed as even when I loaded from a floppy and ran scandisk I got the same error

I put in an extra 256mb there yesterday and got the same error! I can't defrag the drive because it says there's errors on the HDD and says I'm to run scandisk :( .

I've started backing up important files, but I really don't want to have to buy a new HDD... any ideas??

put it in another computer, and scandisk it there. Thast all i can think of. Or get a second HD, insatll windows onto that, and then scandisk it from the second harddrive.

How much space do you have left on your system partition? (c: )

2.7gb left, with c:\ being my only partition.

Can you at least run "chkdsk" ?

What operating system is it? If your getting the same error from a dos boot disk this probably wont work either but it may be worth a shot. Make sure you boot your PC into safe mode (f8 on startup) and run scandisk then.

CHKDSK has NOT checked this drive for errors.
You must use SCANDISK to detect and fix errors on this drive.

Volume HARD DISK created 30/10/2003 11:51
    Volume Serial Number is 2946-1904

    19,999,136 kilobytes total disk space
    2,861,184 kilobytes free

16,384 bytes in each allocation unit
1,249,946 total allocation units on disk
178,824 available allocation units on disk

    647,168 total bytes memory
    589,808 bytes free

Thats what chkdsk told me... running ME here
