    I currently have 1gig Pc2700 DDR Ram which is perfect but I want to overclock and get better quality ram. What type should I go for to accompany a Abit IC7 mobo and P4 2.5ghz?

    Well your ram should keep 1:1 up to 166-170mhz without any problems (its Pc2700 - 166mhz)........ which wouldnt limit your overclock of the CPU . At 166mhz FSB your talkin just shy of 3.2ghz from the CPU.

    Getting Pc3200 would increase performance, but is it really worth it when you have 1gb of the stuff and a P4 "B" ..... thats just my 2c worth ;)

    Hey CoL_Loki

    So do you think I am better off keeping it rather than upgrading?

    I am only getting this mobo and ram to keep me going until the other Prescotts and pci express come out and start becoming the "in" thing.

    How long will a p4 2.5ghz, 1gig of pc2700 ram and a radeon 9800 pro --> 9800 xt last me?

    That motherboard is a great choice but might be more that what you need. If your only waiting a few months before upgrading then spending big bucks (unless you can afford to without hassle) is crazy IMO.

    That sorta setup should keep you going nicely until the changes start comming around, closer to the time you might have to drop your settings in games a bit but nothin majour. Your GFX card is strong, 1gb of Ram is a nice thing to have, the CPU is ok (an overclock mite help a bit :)).

    Id get a cheaper motherboard especially when your not worried about 200mhz + FSB and its more of a stop-gap.

    even this nice cheap mobo and a decent cooler? http://www.jes-computer.de/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=144_111&products_id=15497 ....... mite be a little poor but for €35 you cant complain :) . Has all the features you prob need............. and should overclock to 166mhz FSB pretty easy (3.2ghz chip and memory 1:1).

    Then keep your memory and pop the extra money into the bank awaiting your newer system.........

    Hey Col Loki!

    Thanks for the advice. I will just keep the IC7 since its ordered now anyway. I intend selling it all when these new type of technology are common. Reading what you said about the ram, i will just keep that too. Seems to be ok. Plus I do not really need any better thinking about it more.

    Thanks a lot for the advice!
    :)

    I think your being pretty wise TBH, with the ammount of changes around the corner you want to be spending as little upgrading as possible.

    DDRII is comming out, ram speeds are always increasing.......... so if you got Pc3200 it mite not be usefull for your new system (or mite hinder performance). The Pc2700 will allow you to overclock to a decent point, it will depend more on your chip and cooling than the Ram TBH . IC7 is a board you shouldnt have any problem selling at a later date....... good choice (but a little high end like i said ;)).

    BTX is another thing, PCI express, 90nm AMD64's, different sockets, blue lazer DVD burners, tis impossible to future proof at this point in time. Keep the system as long as you can, it should be decent in games (specially with a 9800xt performer)....... Q1 2005 looks like a wise enough time to purchase, but its hard to tell so far from the time.

    Anyway, enjoy your new board and good luck with it.
