Please forgive my ignorance on this one but can someone explain this firmware thing with dvd writers. I was under the impression that all it does is up the write speed?
How does it work? I hear its a risky business, why? Will it make my writer (Pioneer 107) write discs with greater compatability?
    Thanks.

If you have a 4x burner that you bought before the 8x standard was finished, you CANNOT burn 8x compatible discs on it unless you upgrade the firmware.

If you try and burn on an 8x compatible disc with firmware that was created before 8x compaitble discs were made, the drive won't know how to write properly on it, and thus will more than likely make a coaster.

But if you are never going to use 8x compatible or 16x compatible discs in your burner, then you don't have to upgrade. But it is advisable.

It will also allow 8x and 16x burners to burn faster on media that is certified for 4x, but can take burns at faster speeds such as 6x or 8x. Thats always an advantage.
