Anybody know of an amatuer course in the above? I am doing the research (i.e. Google) but thought I would ask here. I would combine two interests of mine and I may be of help to some 'real' work. I'd probably have to do fresh water diving too which could be fun.

You should watch wreck detectives Phil. They have archaeologists on regularly... like every show. A lot of them get in the water and dive as well. Its on Discovery Channel a couple of times a week.

I've never heard of a diving archaeologists course , thats not to say it doesn't exist... i would imagine you just learn your land stuff and then port the skills to underwater... measurements/cataloging/pocketing the odd gold artifact.

The PADI Navigation Speciality would be handy in this area... if you are working in a spread out area being able to nav your way around would be helpful.

If you are intrested in doing voluntary work, i now about a boat in Malaysia that need divers for archaeological diving. Think there are more opportunities outside Ireland for this work. In some countries i think you will experience that you would need HSE Scuba Course to do any work underwater.

    Hi Phil

I know you specified Recreational Course - but The UU have one http://campusone.ulst.ac.uk/course_details.cgi/25 in Maritime Archaeology - a local diver here is doing it and loves the course. Campus One is the Distance Learning/E LEarning section of the university of ulster, I done my MSc there through them it is an excellent way to do an MSc.

    Maybe an idea?

    Ka:-)
