Microsoft released a statement today saying that it won't work on pirated copies of XP! I'll post a link when I find it again. <edit>Link </edit>
Also they are still keeping to the "first half of 2004" line so I'm guessing sometime next month for it to come out. RC1 is in tests at the moment afaik, and RC2 is out this month

Why is everyone in such a flap about this? Service Packs are not only meh at best, but this one is the start of trusted computing.

I have this service pack and it is a big improvement security wise the new inbound and outbound firewall is quite good. All we need now is inbuilt virus protection and you will find this will come with Longhorn considering recent company takeovers by Microsoft.

How big is the file TCP/IP?
I heard it was around 160mb. That's a lot of bugs fixed!

You on the beta list or something?

This isnt going to help all that much. Virus scanners need updates, same as the OS. We wouldnt have such worm problems if people kept up to date with their OS updates. You think they're going to keep up to date with their virus definitions? Its obviously a step in the right direction, but only a baby one.

I wouldnt bet on anti-virus making into longhorn being as bits are being dropped left right and center to get it out the door earlier. Most of WNGCB (aka Palladium aka DRM type gubbins) has been dropped. Only Nx has been retained.

There's an article on the register this week about the silence from MS since they bought an antivirus co last year, and the difficulties of integrating AV into the OS that wont break the other AV-vendors software. Apparently most AV packages will not tolerate other AV packages coz they work at such a low level.

And the speculation on the 'not working on pirate copies' is that its the same as in SP1. Basically only a few known pirated keys wont work.

I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't install the service pack" frame of mind. I made the mistake of installin SP1 when it came out & my system slowed to a crawl. I took it off & have yet to regret it. There'd have to be something seriously wrong with my system before I'd even look at SP2.

You can bet that new games will start requiring it. GTA Vice City requires SP1 (or so it says on the box anyway)
