I am just wondering, for those of you who have a Zalman 7000cu on your processor, what are the chances of removing the processor and Zalman and transferring them to another motherboard? Can you see this as possible? I ma looking at my Zalman now and wondering if it will be easy to take off?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks :)

Just be careful if you try it!

A friend of mine exploded his brand spanking new AMD 64 3400+ by doing that. He pulled the heatsink off to hard, and damaged the pins.

If you take the heatsink and chip off as one unit, and then seperate them it should be safe... but don't trust me on that one.

EDIT: I think i misunderstood. If you are leaving the chip and heatsink as one unit (and not seperating them) then there should be no problem whatsoever, just take care pulling the chip out and reinserting it.

Would it be easier to take them off as one rather than seperating? This makes me nervous.

Do it step by step, make sure you lift the locking handle (P4) while pulling, i didnt do this and thank god while i was pulling it poped up itself, it it hadnt i would be buying a new Mobo and CPU..... Not nice.

When you have the heatsink clear, make sure you clean all the crap off it before you put it on a new chip.

    Good luck.

Thats the thing Rabbit. Its staying on the same chip. I just have to change mobo.

Should I still do it step by step?

Does it really get stuck that hard to the CPU? :dunno: I was thinking of taking mine off and replacing the Zalman goo with some Arctic Silver. Sounds like an ordeal by these accounts!

Was thinking about the same thing Adeptus. I'll probably try but if it doesnt come off easily I'll probably leave it as it is.

On my cpu the goo didn't stick solid within the 2 weeks from when i put the cooler on, and the time i had to RMA my mobo. But on my friends it stuck solid within hours. If it doesn't come off easily, don't force it. But i think half the problem was that he didn't release the locking handle thingy :p

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Took mine of my old asus nforce2 mobo and installed it on my 865 mobo at the start of the year, just step by step. No problems encountered. The HS is heavy but easy to install / uninstall

Was just thinking about when I put the 7000 on, I thought there was a fair bit of lateral movement when the bars weren't inserted, so I thought it'd be easy enough to remove. Also thought the sliding would promote a slicker, more even interface between the CPU and the HS. It's probably a mass/mess of goo under there! :)

Think I'll tackle it this weekend.

fix it Russian style! hit it with a Hammer! lol

    but seriously

grab it and wobble it! left right, then up!

    btw, what is goo?

Goo= thermal paste. This works by making a better conact between the CPU and the heatsink, allowing the heat to leave the cpu and enter the heatsink easily. Very useful goo.
