Wine Help

Have you ever had one of those days...

This morning running Suse 9.0 with a 2.6.3 kernel and Wine 20040408-1 and the Ximian winelibs from the mono project I had a program called flexidata running perfectly. Flexidata is a halfwits database frontend that is used in education, its use is that as it runs so well under wine that there is _NO_ barrier to using linux in primary or junior high schools (basically upto 3rd year for us oldtimers).

So happy am I by this result, that I send a screenshot off to the programmers and write it up for the wine apps database. Lunchtime comes around and with it the post and my copy of Suse 9.1, so I tar up my home drive and stick it on the spare partition. Installation is typical Suse, so paionless that you almost wish for the slackware days of 6 years gone.

Install finishes and I update the installed wine to the same build from the mono project, along with everything else, stick my home directory back and fire it up again. Nothing.

Fair enough I think. Get rid of .wine, and rerun winesetup and go to reinstall Flexidata. And now the damn wise installer just gets to the splash screen before locking up. I've now diffed the 2 configs and tweaked just about every possible setting I can think of and still nothing. Has anyone got any ideas of what I can try next.

BTW: Last week I was given the go ahead to convert the IT department at a local high school to a dual boot system. Windows 98 and Suse 9.1. This is a total of some 200 machines, a combination of both desktops and laptops. All 1st year pupils will be taught only on linux, and all pupils, bar the final year will be using OpenOffice. Everyone will be using Mozilla and Email is being provided by Suse Open Exchange. Authentication will be via open ldap and ontop of all that by september I'm going to be putting together a version of knoppix that will near as damn it replicate the pupils school desktop for home.

Infact other than the win2k3 fileserver the legacy staff insisted on having, the only black spot is my paycheck, oh and the lack of sleep :)

    Regards,

    Ben

dunno, youd need to post some output, -debugmsg +all.
That sends a whole load of info, most of which is totally useles,, look for the error: messages, warnings, usually dont matter.
you could always try to degrade your wine version if it worked with a previous install. It can probably be fixed from wine config though, playing around with dlls or what not , natve bulletin .etc/

My own anecdotal evidence is that on Gentoo, there is some sort of post-install script stuff done, which creates a file in my .wine directory called cachedmetrics.: 0.0 and for some reason, means that *lots* or programs run much better on that .wine setup then on another SuSE box I have.

So much so I ended up tarring the .wine directory on the Gentoo box and untarring it on the SuSE box and big surprise, it worked!

So, if it worked in an older version of wine its mostly to do with the wine config then anything else, I'd *guess*.

The weirdest thing is that when I got to work this morning and fired up my laptop the bloody thing worked first time, which is worrying because from last nights work nothing should of changed. Still as long as it works.

Typedef, have you diffed the 2 folders, I would be interested in the contents of the cachedmetrics. From the name I'm guessing that its some kind of extra X configuration.

    Ben
