I'm in abit of a stew here... I borrowed someones laptop and broke it.

Last week a floppy got stuck in the drive ... the metal bit of the floppy ...
but I gently pried it out and it was working ok

now today any floppy I put in the drive comes up saying it needs to be formatted

any suggestions on how to fix it?

there must be still something stuck in the drive did you get the spring out too?

can you pop the drive out and open it up, or else just shake the fook out of it, might dislodge it

nope its not Dell and the drive is built in...

should I attempt to pok around with a knife to see if I can find the spring?

*that sounds so dodgy .. there must be another solution?*

If I was you, I wouldnt be sticking a knife into a laptop!!! The solution to every problem is not to stab it!!!

I would come clean with your mate and see if you cant get it fixed. If the floppy just got stuck, if not really your fault!!

no knifes? ... how about tweezers? :D

I bet ye it is the spring ... I never noticed it before ....

come clean? ... I still have 3 weeks before I have to give it back.

    I'll fix it.

metal cover might have sliced a drive belt, those edges can be very sharp

surly the drive must come out, those things don't last pissing time

found the spring... tweezers got that! :D

but I think its done damage

It an Acer Aspire laptop ... the drive doesn't pull out ... then again I haven't unscrewed the case ...

    should I?

Where do I get that fixed? ... it was bought online

[forgot to mention] The problem is ... the contents of the last floppy that was successfully read is being displayed

First thing i'd do is make a bootdisk from Bootdisk and see will the notebook boot from that. If you can then it may not be the drive at all...

I that I had to pull a spring out of the drive with tweezers pretty much says its the drive thats the problem ..

but I'll give the boot disk a go.
