I am off to Hong Kong on June 8th for a few days and I wanted to get a Mobile phone and digital camera out there.
I hear that they are a lot cheaper, any idea how much anybody?

I'd just like to get an idea for my budget.

They are a bit cheaper over there, and you get some models you don't get here. Best place to go is Sham Shui Po on the Red MTR line. There is a street to the west of the station which is well known for selling a broad range of mobiles, and rememebr to haggle!

Also if you are looking for general computer gear from the... erm, Golden Dragon Center I think it was called... generally just follow your nose.

    HAGGLE HAGGLE HAGGLE

    serioulsy haggle,

HK is no differant to any other old-skool asian city, haggling is the norm, be ruthless, and when they tell you that because of your rediciculous offer their children will go hungry tonight and they will have to sell their shirt on the way home, HAGGLE MORE - they are expert liars and the sob stories are second to none.

    example 1:
Kathmandu, nepal - beautiful hand carved chess set
    asking price: 100 US dollars
    my 1st offer: 15 dollars
    my buying price: 25 dollars

    example 2:
    Bankok, thailand - "original" dvds
    asking price: 5 US dollars
    my 1st offer: 1 dollar
    my buying price: 1 dollar

I was there last xmas and will be again in June. Mobiles I didn't find to be too much of a bargain, especially as they are mad for the newest models, so always at the top end of the price range. (though I wasnt looking too hard for a mobile)
But for computer and camera gear you can save substantially.

As whizz bang says Golden Dragon Centre is component heaven.
Also for dodgy DVDs and software if thats your thang.

Mong Kok another street for camera gear. Also on the Red MTR line.

Night market the place to go for kitsch electronic crap (gifts) and mega cheap GameBoy games. (Gameboy Advance SP cost me about €75 at Sham Shui Po)

Haggle heartily and remember there are loads of places to buy, so shop around. Plus its low tourist season so buisness (for them) will be slow.

    Enjoy.

Yep, Mong Kok is cool too, the Mong Kok Computer center is also good for highend PDSa and accessories too, but golden dragon is more fun for the shier breath of what they have there... all sorts of odd case mod accessories and and like.

I was half thinking of organising a "Geek Tours" holiday package where you take a bundle of techies around these places where they can buy gear to their hearts content!

    never did though...

are there any online Hong Kong electrical retailers that ship worldwide?

I wouldn't mind knowing if there any online retailers too. My 2 month old Sharp Gx30 with a 512MB SD card was stolen on Sunday. I can't claim insurance because the policy is less that 60 days old and I can't get it for the upgrade price again.

    I am sad...
