    Hi All,

I was jst wondering if any of u have changed careers and how u got on... I'm 25 and at the moment I work on a IT Helpdesk - the pay is crap(€21K) and i feel like i'm stuck in a rut...I've been in my company for 3 years - 1.5 in IT. I'm good at my job and have loads of friends in the company but lately I've been having more bad days than good and when I start looking at ads for other IT jobs I don't know if it's what I want to do - I have a degree in computer science but i took the helpdesk job cos I didnt want to program and i'm more interested in the hardware side...Whats getting me down is that fact that there are 3 of us running the Helpdesk and basically keeping the company ticking over but they won't give us a pay rise and we're always rushed off our feet, also some of the peeps we have to deal with are jst well w**kers - we're underpaid and underappreciated!!...Anyhoo I hate them sob-story posts so i'll stop - if any1 out there has changed careers especially from IT i'd really appreciate your advise...

It depends on what you're after I suppose, you could always stay in IT and take some more specific training like a CCNA and tackle the whole networking side of things... you might regret throwing away a degree if you left IT all together.
I'm not quite clear on what your goals are as regards a career change... do you want to move to an entirely different industry?

I dont know what my goals are either - i'm starting network+ next week so maybe your right - when i think of it its the helpdesk side thats bugs me a lot of the time - people being snotty and rude cos something breaks thats no-ones fault etc...I want to do more admin stuff so I guess i'll jst hav to hit the books and wait till i have more experience...but thanx for the reply!

    Hi there,
If you are unsure what you want to do may I suggest the folowing "The pathfinder" by Nicholas Lore (fireside books)
It is aimed at people in just your situation and is written in any easy to manage style. It asks the common sense question and provides the resourses to answer them. Anyway get out of support before you go mad, and good luck.

Umm, welcome to IT... 5 years on the job and still loving it... *sob*

Honestly... I'd get out once you have the network +
Go off and travel, work overseas, enjoy yourself. That would be my best advice to myself 3 years ago.
If you really love IT you'll keep up to speed with the industry no matter what you are doing. If you don't love IT - get the h*** out now, save yourself an ulcer and some time insane!
If you want to come back and work, you'll find employers appreciate some "world experience" on a resumé. As long as you can show you weren't just messing about overseas, they respect that someone has managed to get it together to go off and do what other people dream of. Self motivated...? Or stuck in a rut? To leave or not is always your choice.
www.nixers.com is a pretty neat site for overseas jobs - sometimes really cool ones if you can get them.
