I rang up sky the other day to order the free digibox installation for €10. I get onto some place in scotland - talking to a real nice woman, really pleasant. Takes all my credit card details, address, phone numbers etc. and then at the end of the call, tells me that "we'll have an installer over in about 5 weeks". 5 WEEKS???!!!   I nearly had a heart attack. What the hell is the delay for?

What were you expecting for €10, prompt service?

You get what you pay for.

Just ordered it with Sky+ which is costing me in total €314. Earliest installation date is 31st May - that is still over 3 weeks.

Still its not a bad deal though, I take you are getting a sky + box, dish and installation for this?

I am getting the lot for this and to be honest, it isn't too bad at all.Don't mind the wait too much either.

Actually Tony, one thing missing from your site is an explanation of your offerings to getting Sat afternoon footie. Then again, it isn't exactly legal I suppose.

what's illegal about watching Saturday afternoon football. some games are available FTA

My understanding on the issue is that Sky own the rights for broadcasting the Premiership to both the UK and Ireland.
Just because you can pick up a broadcast here doesnt mean it is legal.

EDIT: no links to those websites please

On legal advice I dont post this on the website, thanks for the input

    on the 10e offer

did anyone notice a 35e charge for some modem?

just talking to one of the engineers who was working on a house

apparently it never works out at 10e

if your phone line is more than 3mtrs from the digibox it's an extra 25e
if the dish needs to go on the chimney instead of the side of the house it's another 45e

he said the majority of the 10e installs end up working up to over 80e

    anyone had exp with this?

Tony - I was told by sky that they were getting my installation done through an "independent retailer". How do sky go about choosing this/these retailers or installers, do you know ?

And to add to the 5 Week waiting list - the reason is because sky have over 11,000 new sky digital and sky+ installation to get through to date. Pretty unbelievable if you ask me.

Here are the charges sky DON't tell you about:

Installation to modem of 2 metres away or more: €35.
Installation of dish on chimney: €50.
Co-ax of over 20 metres: €0.50 per metre.
Failure to be at your home when installer comes: €20.
Installation of a dish on brackets etc.: €50+ (and whatever extra co-ax you need).

    Sickener, isn't it?
The phoneline is especially stupid, since this is compulsory

To be honest I doubt this is being done by an independent as sky are such bad payers.
If it was being done by an independent the sky rep should have been able to tell you which one, maybe you could ring them back quoting your order number and ask again.

The current feeling I get from talking to other retailers is they want to have as little as possible to do with sky.

Well firstly the dish should not be installed on chimney unless a lashing kit is used and this does take more time and of course the kit is not free.

50 cents per metre is reasonable as long as its CT100

Failure to be at your home?, well if the appointment was agreed this costs money as the installer may not be able to go to the next job early, similarly I would expect a customer to be compensated if the installer does not turn up.

€35 to run phoneline over 3 metres does seem over the top though and fixing a charge is unreasonable as every job is different.

I really dont see why this is a "sickener" as time and equipment do cost money, keep in mind that the installer has no control over which way your house faces and where your phone socket is.

Having said that the whole phoneline issue is a serious impediment to sky sales in Ireland.

    My two cents

I'm a little sceptical about this figure of 11,000 given to you, the reason sky brought in this offer was to boost flagging sales.

I really dont see why this is a "sickener"

Tony if someone offers you something for 10e you go to buy it and suddenly the price has gone up to nearly 80 - 90e

    come on

    digibox - dish - install 10e

and that's how much it should cost

if i demanded it was installed on the chimney then yes i should pay.

but if it's case of he has to do it to get the signal...tough ****...phones to far away from your poxy box? tough ****

    this is misleading people

SKY SALE NOW ON 10E DIGIBOX + DISH + INSTALL

but we're really going to charge you the 100e it is anyway and make you wait 5 weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

Yes I agree with you it should be made more clear as part of the offer. Its not a case of deamanding that it should be on a chimney, in some cases its the only place it will work. Its not a case of saying tough though, the installer is on a set fee from sky and if the job entails more expense for him then obviously someone has to pay although unfotunately some installers go overboard on this.

If you read the offer again you will see the term "standard install" mentioned.

Lets be realistic about this, the install should really cost €100 (vat included) so an installer has to cover his time and expense on extra equipment.

Yet another resaon why I do not get involved with these offers .

How do people know what a standard install is, though? If you ring up sky, you're probably not going to know where the astra satellite is. You may not know that your dish will only function correctly on a chimney (In my case that IS the only place it will work, asI'm in a housing estate). Most people haven't a clue about satellite systems, or how they work, so this is very misleading on sky's part. I think it's ridiculous that you should have to pay out when the guy comes, because you didn't know which way your house points. After all, sky make millions of euro in profit - it won't cost them that much if they are to pay installers the extra cash!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 815 ✭✭✭mickeyboymel

Well I think it is good value.

If you had to buy the digibox, that alone would cost in the region of €240, without installation,or dish , so even if you were to pay Sky €100 for the installation you are still getting it cheap.

You can also downgrade any subscription after the first month to a basic package having availed of the cheap installaiton.

In my opinion, it's small price to pay, and only a minor inconvience of leaving it connected to a phoneline for a year to fully own your satellite equipement which would have cost well over €300 to buy and have installed privately.

They dont pay installers properly as it is so why would they pay more for non standard installs. So you dont know which way your house points and you live there! how can you expect a stranger to predict in advance?

What I normally tell people is look where the sun is at approx 11 am ( at this point some people say " I've no idea been living there for ten years :-) )

As I've said before you pay for what you get if the installer is honest. Nobody works for nothing but I do agree that sky could handle this issue in a much more open manner.

It would seem very few independant installers carry the €10 promotion.

As for the box needing connection to the phoneline for 12months minimum, it must be costing Sky more than it's making. I have lost count on the amount of people who were interested with Sky until they find out they need a phoneline. Sky appeals most to younger couples who usually live in rented accomodation or new home and rely on mobile phones for communications. Obviously, they're usually not keen on forking out more money to Eircom for phoneline, when they have no intention of using PPV services etc.

So Sky is missing quite a lot of potential subscribers in my opinion.

I am in the process of aquiring a secondhand system for a friend of mine who thought he could never have Sky because he has no phoneline, and had never heard of the "Secondhand Contract"

I think the whole phoneline scenario was more to try and prevent the mass exedous of boxes from the UK and here out to Spain and elsewhere.

The subsiditation/ contract issue cannot be the sole reason, as the downgrade option reduces the amount significantly that Sky recoup over the initial twelve months, and if everyone did this I'm sure they would loose big time.

Or are people not aware of this option and blissfully pay the full price subscription for the first year.

I dont think so as sky are quite happy to pick up the sub revenue. I think its because they are under the illusion that they will make vast sums from interactive services whilst they seem oblivious to the amount of custom they are losing from prospective customers.

whats the number you ring for Sky plus.....?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 815 ✭✭✭mickeyboymel

0818 719 834 from Sky direct, or contact your local retailer, or see a list of online shops on the sticky at the top of the forum.

The various pros and cons of each method is well documented throughout here.

Well, I am now absolutely furious at Sky Digital. After waiting nearly 6 weeks for my installation, I got up this morning and was waiting for my pre 9am phone call from the installer to tell me when he was arriving. And i was waiting... and waiting... and waiting...

At 10am I rang sky. They rang the installers phone. It was off. They left a message.
The installer was supposed to ring me.

So I waited... and waited... and waited.

At 1pm, I got so pissed off, I rang them again. They told me that "unfortunately our installation dept closes saturdays and sundays". So what? You (sky) told me that I was having install done today!!!

My prognosis is though, the installer was out on the town last night, got pissed and then didn't bother his arse getting out of bed this morning.

So to my delight, I was told that it would be AT LEAST one week before installation can be booked again? How will I know this won't happen again?

But anyway, I am pissed off and have written a very snotty e-mail to sky.
