I don't want to spoil the party or anything, but just to let you know, Channel 4 is premiering "Aileen: Life And Death Of A Serial Killer" (followed by an interview with Broomfield I think) on Tuesday 11th...

I vote Kill Bill Volume 2 or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...

Not sure if I'd be able to go though... depends on work

have seen both of them and don't think they're worth repeat viewing. val helsing, secret window, monster or laws of attraction, in descending order, are my prefs.

well i finish my exams that day so i will be in the pub from 12:30.

Will definitely try and make it this time. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind would be my first choice but I'm pretty open-minded as I haven't seen any of them yet.

Van Helsing looks to be the best out of a bad bunch :)
Does it have to be the later showing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 118 ✭✭carpocrates

    Eternal Sunshine, eternal sunshine..yaaayyy....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 421 ✭✭SweetBirdOfTruth

van helsing at either 7.30 or 8.30 would work. the 9.15 showing is a bit too late, busses home and all that.

will need a bit more definite interest from people if it's to happen.

any idea what this is ??
    NINJA TUNES: ZEN TV (18)

no info could be found on imdb :( sounds kinda surreal

as for the film club, no matter how much i love the idea and wish i can go.....tuesday nights are a no-go for me until sometime in june/july( angel's on...plus im gonna be recording that aforementioned documentary on this tuesday night, so thanks for the heads up about it)

anybody up for a film club on a day other than tuesday(and preferably earlier in the day; cheaper and easier to get home) send me a pm although i cant on any day until after may 20th(exams :( )

I think the only reason Tuesday was decided on was because most people said other days weren't suitable.
I don't mind what day it's on, but if no-one's going to show it's pointless trying to arrange it.

yeah, i would be up for that.

Still not sure if i'm able to go so DONT include me for now until i give a definite answer.
I suppose Van Helsing is the one i pick. not alot else there really.

What about wonderland at 8.50? (assuming this film club thing is still going to UGC)

I've seen Van Helsing and nothing would make me go back and see it again.

Eternal Sunshine at 8.30 would be the only one i could get to. Would be very interested in that.... Anyone?

I would love to go but unfortunately, Tuedays are out for me until mid June. Its the last season of Angel and I won't miss an episode for the world.

I'm a definite. Anything bar 50 First Dates (I HATE Adam Sandler).

    Eternal Sunshine for me too!!!!!!

there being insufficient interest in this, i think it's best to cancel this event

as this is the third attempt to get this moving, and the previous two drew only three and two people, i'm going to let this idea die

Ah well, it was worth a shot anyway!
Maybe if the interest goes beyond loads of "I can't make it" posts, it would be worth resurrecting.

Its really hard to find a day and time that suits everybody. Why not have a couple of days where smaller groups can go - there seems to be at least 3 or 4 people interested in eternal sunshine ... for tomorrow night. And if tuesday night is never a possibility for some people they can choose some other night to go.
That said, I know its a pain to organise these things and if people are going to say they'll be there and then don't show up then there's not much point in organising it. You could have a cut-off time of 4pm on the day for people to say definitively if they'll be there so that you don't waste your time standing around....

how much smaller than two or three can you get? because two and three is all that have shown up so far.

the only real interest that the three film club threads have generated is from a load of people with all sorts of wonderful reasons as to why they can't go. the film's too early. the film's too late. oh no, i'd rather stay in and watch telly. hey, why don't we rent the sugar club. hey, why don't we organise a film club for an alternative night.

i fully realise that you can't please all of the people all of the time, but nearly two months on from the original idea for this it seems you can't please any of the people any of the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,488 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Maybe the idea just needs a little tweaking (or tweetying :P )

How about trying this by select three movies a fortnight and letting a poll decide what to go see? I think that maybe you tried too hard to please people this week and by giving so many options of different movies, things got a little disorientated.

I'll make sure to check this thread tomorrow, if there's still interest I'm in.

SweetBird, sometimes these things can take a little time to get off the ground. Don't get disheartened about a great idea this early into the game! :)

I would be up for it on a Saturday afternoon. plus it might be easier for alot of the members to go over the weekend instead of a tuesday night.

If you can set up something for an afternoon over the weekend i would find that better.

    what do you think??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 65 ✭✭Archvillain

Gotta say, I think that's a shame to kill it. Coulda been cool.
I really think it could work, maybe, if it were a little more rigorously controlled eg: votes and hands for who can come and not rather than long processions of yes i'd like this and no i'd like that.
I think rather than kill the thing we take on a whole cold Stalinist approach and lay down terms. hold votes... I'd for sure be on for this club and in my opinion at least 2 or 3 others would be too. 5 is something i'd sayand from small acorns...etc
    Weekend idea is interesting too?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 421 ✭✭SweetBirdOfTruth

day time saturday isn't really a good idea. for one, cinema schedules only come out on a friday morning, or you can get ugc's thu afternoon by email. that gives at most a day for people to make their minds up.

day-time midweek is a non-runner for those of us with jobs - withness the complaints about going to a 7.00 film.

i don't think just tweaking the day of the week is going to make any difference. if it's not angel, it'll be coronation street people will want to stay at home and watch. move it to thursday and you're already hitting people with weekend plans (thursday being the new friday and all that).

For me, it's often a case of seeing the movie I want as soon as it comes out. I only live ten minutes walk away from UGC so, since Friday, I've seen Van Helsing, the Fog of War, Secret Window, and Wonderland. The Film Club seems to be going to movies I've already checked out (ironically enough mostly on my own, due to the sheer convenience for me).
Tuesdays would never really have suited me anyway (am often out that night) but Wednesday might've. I think the problem is again ambivalence like that. I guess it will generally depend on knowing the feature in advance, to ensure that people don't see it anyway. Tomorrow would probably be a no go anyway, as I made the nice UGC people give me tickets to the Advanced Screening of 'Shattered Glass' tomorrow. If I can't find a second person to go with me, maybe one of you fine folk will show...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭ObeyGiant

Personally speaking, I didn't even say anything this time because there was absolutely nothing I wanted to see in the UGC this week. I've seen most of what I wanted to see (and a couple of things I didn't want to see - a pox on the people who dragged me to Van Helsing).

Now if there was an extension to the selection of films, to take in the Screen or the IFI, then I would have chimed in. For example, I'd really like to have seen The Saddest Music in the World in the IFI.

I realise that it's more convenient for everyone if there's one cinema, one meeting place, but in this case, it kept me away.

    I dunno, just thoughts.

    What about this:

On the 28/05/2004, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW is out in the UGC which i belive is a Friday, so why dont we arange for the film club to take place on the Saturday Afternoon. I know we wont know the times but for a big film like that it would be showing every few hours. the only problem would be getting tickets cause its the first weekend its out.

    Or

On the 21/5/04 TROY is out in the UGC which i belive is also a friday so how about we arange for the film club to take place THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY AFTERNOON which would be 29/5/04.

What do you think?, its just an idea. if anyone has a better one then by all means.

My experience is to post up a definite date and a movie which YOU decide on, a couple of weeks in advance, and mention it on After Hours.

    That should get some interest.

That looks pretty interesting Sweet Bird. I guess the thing to do is just turn up, since there's no contact info in there. Are you a member yourself? What's it like?
