Barcode reading on your camearphone (sort of)

Semacode are URL barcodes that can be scanned on (some) cameraphones for the purpose of downloading the coded webpage on the phone browser.

The Symbian version is now available to download (for free) and I've just tried it on my Nokia 3650. And even though the FAQ advises that the scan won't work on a CRT it did for me :)

It's a great idea IMHO but I realise that it's going nowhere if it doesn't get the necessary momentum and beat a few other competing systems. I think they need to make a deal with Opera to embed it in the browser.

In theory here is an idea for a service...

You sign up for a WAP service and download some Java for your phones OS from the site.

You tell them where you live etc. Also which Internet "mail order" vendors you like

If you are interested in an item in a shop, you point camera phone at the UPC/EAN product barcode and the WAP site tells you automatically:

    1) Nearby cheapest shops
    2) Optionally "online" retailer with price
    3) Typical average price (is the price on shelf a rip off?)

I have written software using cheap royalty free "off the shelf" Barcode "recognician" for scanning paper documents and it works with most web cams that have "Twain driver" also, on a PC in VB6

Nokia have an RFID reader buit in to a new model. You can move the phone near to a RFID tag and it will generate an even on the phone (could potentially be any thing from ringing a number to displying data from a data base etc...). Gets more intresting the more mainstrem RFID becomes.

There are two US companies who make software that allows normal barcodes to be read.

    www.scanbuy.com - their software won't install

and www. paperclick.com - I got the demo and it worked a treat.

One of them, I can't remember which, has done a neat application for diabetics where the phone scans the item on the shelf and it looks up a database to see whether they can eat it or not.

If your Japanes is good, these two companies also make this software.

    M-Ken - http://www.mken.co.jp/
    Mediastick http://www.mediastick.co.jp/

From what I can figure out, they all license the reader software from someone else. If anyone knows who the someone else is, could they post a reply.
