Right, here's the situation. I was watching a dvd on my pc last night (had it hooked up to a tv) and I paused the dvd to go do something. When I came back about 3 mins later, and hit resume, it just froze. Nothing worked. So I rebooted it but it locked at the Starting Windows screen. Now anytime that I boot up the computer or reboot it, it all goes grand but at the Starting Windows screen (where you can boot up in safe mode or whatnot) it just locks there aswell. The loading LED on the pc goes off and it won't do anymore. I've tried everything I can think of:
Resetting the CMOS - didn't work
Booting in safe mode - still hung at that screen
Disconnecting the dvd drive - didn't work
Booting without a monitor - still didn't work
Changing the Hard Drive to slave/master/single - didn't work

I've really tried everythin but it still won't work. This is really annoying as I have a lot of work to do on the pc, but I can't really do it considering I can't even boot it up properly!!!!

    Spec:
    Windows 2000 sp4 (or 5, I'm not sure)
    AMD Athlon XP 2600+
    768mb RAM
    80gb HDD
    Radeon 9700 pro 128mb
    Dvd drive
    CD-RW drive
    Ps/2 mouse & keyboard

    Any help is mega-greatly appreciated.

Have you tried removing all the cards (graphics etc) and putting them back in one by one - testing the comp each time?

Something you could try is to get your hands on an old pci graphics card and try that - its possible that your radeon my have screwed up and just wont initialise.

No USB devices attached? All cds/dvds out of all drives?

Wierd problem - hope you get it sorted.

Nope no usb appliances plugged in. I'll have a root around and see if I can dig up an old grfx card and I'll remove all the cards aswell etc. There isn't any cds/dvds in the drives either. Could it be a virus? I use AVG 6.0 but I doubt that it is a virus....

Right I've basically re-built the pc, but still nothing. I'm pretty sure it's down to 2 things: either the hard drive or the graphics card. I'll test out the hard drive tomorrow or Friday. And if that doesn't work I'll try and find another graphics card to test that. In the meantime, if anyone has any other suggestions, please throw them up.
    Thanks

I don't how u've partitioned ur hd. But if u had a for OS and progs and another one for Data, well then u might as well format and reinstall the OS. Since that u said that u've tried everything that could be the "last" solution.
I know that fixing would be better and quicker, but resetting the whole lot will work to 99%.

Oh yeah, usually those type of problems are always software related rather than hardware.
