Getting back into the Habit [rant]

    *sigh*

Once again, I have been roped in. Over the long weekend, I was talking to a few friends about the hobby in general, and once again, I've gotten back into gaming (mostly 40k). And it makes me cry. Once again, my reserves of both time and money will dissapear randomly.
Yesterday I decided to take a wander into the shop on Liffey St. It has changed quite a bit.. Back in the late 90's you used to be assaulted by overly-friendly staff, offering to play you in various games of whatnot and talking to you about your army etc.. Nowadays, there is one staff member, who was friendly enough when I asked him something, but the wonder of the place was lacking.
Now, it's a common problem with Games Workshop products, and it always has been, but MY GOD THE PRICES! Back in my day, White Dwarf cost £3.50.. Now it's €6.50. A paint set of 10, with a brush costs €25.. Back in the day it was £10, with a few crappy Space Marines for painting practice. Even considering convertion from English pounds (ahh.. the joys of getting everything at the same price as listed for English) to Irish pounds to euro, it's incredibly steep.
Even the codex I bought for this edition of the game has been dated with a new one. And now I see there's a new edition of the 40k rulebook being issued (nice of them to tell us, though) in late August, which may be followed with a slew of new codices.
But, for some reason, this didn't turn me away. I'm still building, painting and playing. And I have been for about six years. And I'll keep doing it. But why? Has anyone else out there given up the hobby for a while, then come back, despite all the evident downsides?

Out of curisoty, what codex did you buy? Rumour has it that the marines and bugs are to be redone soon after the new edition is released.

As for the prices, I seem to recall hearing somewhere that on average the price of 'stuff' doubles every ten years or so. If its been at least 5 years since you were playing, call that a 50% increase. With the changeover to the euro on top of that, you're probably talking double the prices you remember.

If you're trying to play on a budget, eBay is good for picking up cheap stuff (at times). You've also got Bartertown as an option to build up your forces.

I did drfit out for a while, towards the end of Rogue Trader - start of 2nd ed, but that was mostly down to my nearest opponent being about an hours travel away, which made my games few and far between. Since I moved to Dublin, I normally play weekly, or thereabouts.

I'm out of the gaming habit for a while now. I know I'll come crawling back (probably because I'm going to have to organise all the WH gaming at a con next year) but right now I'm really into Roleplaying in the WH40K setting. GW have a brilliant universe developed, and the lack of roleplaying in it is a damn shame Inquisitor comes close, but adapting the background to GURPS RPG rules has proven very fun...

That may change. If you look at GWs site you'll see a news item that they've set up a new group called Black Industries to do RPGs.

    http://www.blackindustries.com/home.htm

First up is WFRP, but from their main page it looks like a 40k RPG is a definate possibility.

I got the Imperial Guard codex when it first came out, relatively soon after the 40k rerelease. It seemed fine and played fine (probably because GW want us to buy things like Codex Catachans).. A bit sparse though, and admittedly, the new version has a lot more units and some nice fluff though.

And, Sarky, I concur. The imagery and the setting of 40k are really what keeps dragging me back

The IG-dex is fairly recent ... thats not going to be redone for a while yet. Everything since the Tau codex was apparently done to be compatable with the new edition.

It always happens... You quit. Life is good. You can afford stuff. You walk into a magazine store, skim through a couple of games magazines.. what's that in the corner of your eye? Wow, the artwork is inspiring... The latest white dwarf? Surely a peek can't hurt? Oh my god look at those models... I must have them! etc etc etc

Was it just a measly metal necron or do i remember White Dwarf giving away models ever so often? It's a bitch how we're paying for these guys to get sex :(

    Hehe:)

I remeber when the news of the rules uptade came oot first. We were promised that new codices wudnt be needed. Tutut GW.

First will be space marines and nids, cos the new box set will contain both armies (battle of McCragge apparently).

Then Eldar are apparently following suit, which is good, cos they need an overhaul.

    Then I think its orks.

Oh, and new terminator models are comin out early 2005.

To coincide with a full price update to the space marine codex, no doubt.

Sorry, sorry. Slipped into a bit of cynicism there.

Damn, I just realised I'm going to have to obtain and learn the new rules regardless of whether I play or not. Stupid running wargames at convention...

Oh, yes, that reminds me. Galway will be running its first gaming con, Itzacon Eire, sometime next march. There will be WH(40K). Maybe Bloodbowl. And stuff. :)

    Indeed. Stuff rocks.

I'll have something worth advertising in a couple of months. Until then, keep watching the skees. Uh, skies.
