Aerial versus Sky...or both?

Hi there...I have a query over what is the best option.

I currently have Sky (basic package) and there's not much on it so thinking of cancelling subscription.

Now, I have moved to an area in Rush, North Co Dublin and it's on a height so I was told I could 'pick-up' RTE, etc plus the UK channels clearly with an aerial.

So, first thing is it worth getting an aerial, I thought everything will be broadcast in digital over the next year or so so is it still worth getting an aerial now.

Secondly, has anyone any experience of the reception in the Rush area with an aerial?

Finally, is there such a thing as Free to View with a Sky box if I cancel my subscription?

    Thanks

    Just on the Aerial.
I didn't want Sky or Ntl so got an aerial which lasted me 12 years.
Cost was IRISH 187.50 (15.63 a year!) and no extra monthly cost per connection.
    RTE 1,2, TV3, TG4, UTV, C4 AND BBC 1+2.
    Worked for me (Rathfarnham)

AFAIK you'd stand a resonable chance of picking up the UK terrestrials in North Dublin, and you would certainly get the RTEs.

You already own the Sky box, so you are entitled to use it as a Free-to-air receiver. Most importantly, that means that you will be able to receive all the BBCs plus Sky News, plus about 100 other channels (many of which will be crap, though).

There is speculation that ITV will follow BBCs example possibly later this year, and if that were the case then you could also receive ITV free via your old Sky box. Simiarly, Channel 4 and possibly five may then follow.

With regard to Digital terrestrial, afaik you will still need an aerial to receive digial signals. (You would also need to buy a receiver to view the digital terrestrial broadcasts).

Depending on what part of Rush you are living in you will be able to recieve all the uk and Irish channels clearly via an aerial. If you were prepared to do the job of putting up the aerial yourself,it would cost you in around 100 euros. If you want more info please pm me as I live in the area.
