    Wilkinstown, Co.Meath, May 03 2004 -

The Wilkinstown Target Shooting Club, an Olympic target shooting club, in conjunction with the Navan Road Club are organising Ireland's first Summer Biathlon match, as part of RTE's Telethon for Children in Need.

The event will take place on Friday the 21st of May from 7.00pm at Wilkinstown. It will consist of bicycle riding and air rifle shooting. The competitor will be required to shoot five falling plate targets, and them mount his or her bicycle and cycle a timed circuit of 4.5miles (leaving the air rifles at the Wilkinstown range). They will then shoot another five targets and cycle a second circuit, shoot another five targets and cycle a final circuit and shoot a final five targets.

As this is the first time anything like this has been done in Ireland, and as it is being done in association with the Children in Need Telethon, it is is being run as a purely fun event. We hope the competitors will use fancy dress and put on an entertaining sight for the telethon.

Should this prove successful, the National Target Shooting Association (the National Governing Body for Olympic target shooting in Ireland) will look at the prospect of establishing Summer Biathlon as a serious competition event for the future.
