Decent pop3 e-mail address

    Hi folks,
Ok, I've had the same e-mail address for something like 7 years now, but the company changed owners a while ago. It was with Cable and Wireless ("xxxxxx@cwcom.net") and has since been taken over by blotblue.
As a result I can still accept e-mails to "xxxxx@cwcom.net", but any time I send an e-mail I'm sending it from "xxxxxx.boltblue.com".

Rather than finding a way around this, I'm looking to find a good free e-mail provider that supports pop. I have an account with eircom, but they don't support pop on the free account, but are otherwise a very good provider.

I'm looking for first hand experience, as a google will return more results than I care to look through.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    S.

I have a free eircom account and pop works?

try using mail1.eircom.net as your server.

    same here
i think using pop3.eircom.net as the pop server & whatever smpt address your isp uses should do the trick

The eircom POPs are mail1.eircom.net or mail2.eircom.net.

Why not get your own domain?

I'm assuming you can pop mail from your old cwcom address. Just use your current ISP's SMTP server to send mail, with your "from" address as the cwcom one.

Some spam filters will catch email if the from field is changed though...

Works with .ie or .co.uk (and probably a few others too but not with .com unless you pay for it. YahooPOPs will sort out .com though)

Ebonyks, AFAIK campus.ie doesn't allow POP3 access. If they do, will someone please tell me how to access it as I've tried numerous ways but still nothing.

why not splash out and register your own domain - then use me@myname.com for your email?

i did it last year, took an hour or two to set up, cost about 40 euro for 2 years altogether, and has saved me a lot of hassle - have pop3, secure webmail, and my own website if I ever want it.

cant remember who its hosted with but can find out if you want.

That one seems to force me into a .com address (may be a cookie thing) but this one should give a .ie by default.

I've also got a domain, POP3 and webmail with www.directnic.com , costs around $20 in total for a year. There's loads more that do the same though.

I have both eircom and campus accounts, but have stopped using the eircom one due to excessive amounts of spam. The campus one is fine, however they do have frequent server problems and they once managed to delete all of my emails and folders.

I've got a few pop3 accounts, eircom, yahoo and hotmail. Eircom is crap because there are no spam filters. I'm gonna get flamed here, but why not use hotmail? It's got an ok 2 meg limit, spam filters, virus protection and works great with outlook.

    Duffman, tman, Johnny;

My eircom pop e-mail works ok with incomming mail.
The thing is the smtp only works when sending e-mail to people only with eircom.net e-mail addresses...

Is this the same with you?
If not, what do you have entered for your smtp server?

    Thanks,
    Stephen.

I second online.ie. Looks just like a webmail account but gives you pop3 too. I've been using them for ages and never any problems. Completely free, no advertising anywhere on your mail. If you need settings, pm me.

You may not care about POP/SMTP access to your email now, but you may at some stage in the future and Hotmail doesn't allow it...

There is also all those damn MSN ads, and those footers that they add to the end of every email that you send extolling all the virtues of MS/MSN/HOTMAIL...

online.ie sounds like a much better bet with 20MB of storage, and I assume they have spam filtering..

When Google release GMail to the general public the whole webmail scene is going to change for the better very quickly, for one thing they are offering 1GB of storage per account, see more details here...

there is a fantastic bit of software called hotmail popper which allows you to use pop3 for hotmail.
I think you have to pay for the latest version but you'll find the previous version which was free with google.

Eh... wasn't that statement released on April 1st?? While Gmail looks like it will happen, I think Google are having a laugh saying that its got a 1gb limit. Firstly, who would ever need such a limit, secondly anyone who does use it will not be using the 1gig for holding emails. People would sh*t all over it.

What is so unbelieveable! Google are working under the assumption that most users will never get anywhere near 1GB, and with the cost of commodity storage falling all the time its certainly achieveable. Google could grow the capacity as users consumed it.

Basing it on current hard-drive storage cost, 1GB costs about €1! with the market they will be taking away from Microsoft this is certainly commercially viable.

Remember that a number of years ago Microsoft paid around $400 million for Hotmail, so this is obviously a vey valuable market.

Now, combine this storage capacity with Google searching technology and you have a winner. This is just my opinion, but I think Google will be rolling this out before the end of 2004...

While the assumption is that no-one will ever need the limit, we have users with upto 5Gb of saved mails. Granted, they're business mails.

But as more and more people get more and more bandwidth, it won't be long before 10Mb emails crammed with photos become both commonplace, and acceptable. Netiquette at the moment says that emails of that size are ridiculous, but 5/10 years time, they may be normal. 102 of those and you've filled up the full Gig.
