    Hi,

I have recently purchase a second-hand laptop. It's a little old now, but it runs Windows XP. Here's the spec. :

    Brand: Samsung

    Processor Speed: 750 MHz

    Chip Type: Intel Pentium III

Hard Drive Capacity (GB): 20 GB

    Memory (RAM): 192 MB

    Screen Size: 12 inches

    Primary Drive: DVD/CDRW Combo

Features: 10/100 LAN Card, Firewire, Modem, Sound Card, USB

I do realize that it isn not the most up-to-date laptop around , but i works well for applications, dvd watching, and the such.

What I "Need2Know" is that, for a laptop of it's "power":D ......... can you reccommed any upgrades (other than a new laptop :) ),, that would help the increase proformance of this little computer.

I will be mainly using it for software applications

    Any suggestions are greatly appriciated.

    Thank you for reading.

Yeah, ram is the main problem but personally Id just stick a copy of win98se on it instead.

Xp crawls on 128, and isn't much better on 192. Win98 is a poxy operating system. Buy a 256mb stick from boards ( put up a wanted ad for 144pin sdram ), or buyandsell, or ebay. Swap it for the 64mb stick, then you will have 256 + 128 = 384mb, plenty for xp, or linux+kde/gnome. I bought 256mb pc133 sdram for my old laptop for $60 off ebay, nearly a year ago, I'm sure its cheaper now.
Other upgrades.. get a bigger, faster hard drive. Your machine more than likely has a 4200rpm drive. 5400 rpm drives are a fair bit faster, and tend to come with more cache as well. Or you could go mad, and splash out on a 7200 rpm drive :)

if you can lay your hands on win2000 put that on instead of xp. wouldn't be as intensive on the RAM as xp. if you are mainly using it for messing aorund with applications as already mentioned before, get some more ram.
if you can find the model of your samsung laptop it would be easy to google what memory is needed. a good few people buy memory from crucial.com just give your brand name and model and it will tell you what memory is needed and at what price.

i installed xp on to my laptop for fun. really slowed it down, 700mhz 128mb ram :( it takes a few min after it boots up before it can run properaly. will change it back to win2000.

    edit: cos i can't spell

Microsoft dosnt care about that old laptop you have.
As long as XP runs on the systems that were being sold at the time XP came out (256ram 1000mhz) then thats their job done as far as their concerned.
