I like Rickman. But the way the film industry works, there is a depressing tendency for him to get type cast as comic Grand Guignol villains. As such, he is always equal to himself, (unforgettable as the Sheriff of Nottingham or the sleazy political spinmaster in Bob Roberts) but underused IMHO. He is capable of so many more dimensions, and is never so good as when he is cast against type.

My favorite performance by him though is as the revenant cellist in Anthony Minghella's Truly Madly Deeply, we have a delightfully nuanced comic portrayal, seductive enough to get called back from the dead by the grief of his distraught widow, but also sufficiently annoying, flimsy and full of ticks, as to teach her to dispense with his memory and get on with her life.

So what do you guys think, do you think there's more to him than just a villain?

Yeah but his Christmas Is Cancelled sneer is sooooo good! :)

Rickman is no fool he's of that school of British actors that can do challanging work on stage, then pick up a million bucks for a few weeks work playing the lead villian opposite the All-American hero. Nice work.

    Mike.

Well, i'm glad you think so! :)

I've never seen him on stage, but have a couple of friends that saw him in Private Lives. They said it was pretty good.

I thought that he was great in Dogma.
"Well what do you know? I think the little stoners got something". :D

He has one of those voices that just stand out and it always makes him sound like a bad guy so thats probably why he's cast in that role so much.

I can't imagine anyone else as Snape in the Harry Potter movies. He has captured the character perfectly...
