It would be easier to make a recommondation knowing what type of music you intend to play on it, but for 800 smackers you cant really go wrong with one of the PRS SE series guitars, one of the santana or soapbar ones! or maybe one of those Gibson les paul specials Les Paul Special ! But if you plan going the second hand route you might be able to get your hands on a real nice strat/tele, maybe a gibson les paul studio.

Those Les Paul Specials are god awful machines. The neck is horrible, the pickups muddy and horribly over priced. Of course, it depends what you play, but I'd point you towards some LTD guitars, the cheaper version of ESP.

For €800, you could get an EC-300 or an EC-400 with EMG 81 pickups :D

For versatility of guitar Id recommend a Strat or strat copy. I bought an artist series strat about 3 years ago and its fabulous for everything, light to heavy.

Recently I bought an epiphone les paul standard for €400 new and Im am delighted with it. Currently I gig with the les paul and leave my strat in the bag because the les paul has fantastic distortion sounds with my marshall amp. I cant see any major reason for splashing out too much more for a les paul guitar unless I was really really loaded or going to play for a living.

Must say though, those ESP's look tasty feyla.

Still though, les pauls just dont have the clean sound that Strats have(sweet extra hot texas special single coils on mine anyway)

Some of the LTD are quite pricey though.

    But worth it tbh.

That's where the EMG 81's come in. Not the same characteristics of single coils but uber-clean when they need to be :)

But they're meant to be the cheap versions?

They are the cheap versions! ESP are €1500+ at least. LTD's rarely break €1000. Never said they were the cheapest guitars in the world but they are lovely to play and they are worth every penny imo.
