for someone who is unemployed, you surely do have some righteous opinions about some companies...

    A> I'm not
B> Answering someone's question and letting them know they'll be out 60 euro for someone to do their taxes every month is hardly what I would call 'righteous'.

congratulations on getting a job in the last day and half :)

thats the sort of enthusiasm we like to see here on the work board :p

why do u have to pay someone to do your taxes? aren't they just supposed to do them? i thoughtthats the way it works in the majority of companies?

The idea is you're an outside contractor. You can do the taxes yourself if you know how...

Just so you all know if you have your own limited company there is no need to pay any administration charge.

If you don't have a limited company you need to pay an administration charge of €12 per week to calculate deductions.

Everyone gets told this at the interview.

There is I think 1-2 spots left if anyone is interested....

I know two people who went for this job and they were told they had to have their taxes done by stelfox in fact it's in the contract that you agree they will take the 12 euro a week from your pay. Other people have said on this board that you used to be "allowed" to do your own tax but that all changed...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,549 ✭✭✭The Brigadier

No it hasn't changed. You simply can't work as a sole trader.

If you want to do your own taxes you need to have a limited company.

Why the hell can't the company employ people normally like everywhere else? Its not like these are high paid consultant contracts.

The company saves money and the agency covers their ass in case anyone sues anyone. I assume. Well at least until all these jobs are done in some 3rd world country.

The main reason for it is headcount.

Companies often due to senior management decisions have a certain headcount they need to stick to. Bringing in temp/contract alllows companies to bring in needed staff without raising the headcount.

... and in order to have a limited company you need audited accounts, which means paying an accountant €700-€1,000 per year - not really an option for someone earning, say, €19,200 p.a. and not necessary if you're a sole trader, where all that's necessary is to register as being self-employed and file your returns on time. You do not need to have a limited company to do your own taxes.

Really? I know of other companies taking on contract staff for the same reason -- headcount -- and they have not had a problem with taking on sole traders.

I was only referring to this instance. You need to have a limited company to do your own taxes for this position

While some companies will deal with sole traders, an awful lot now will only deal with limited companies.

In this instance Eircom will only deal with limited companies. There are many reasons for this including employers liability cover which are only addressed by having a limited company.

Remember having a limited company means having limited liability. Being a sole trader means having UNLIMITED liability.

I got my accounts done for €300 plus VAT. Fully audited etc and filed at the companies office. There are some serious advantages to being a limited company, You can claim VAT back on all your petrol etc used to get into work and then offset your travel expenses against the tax. Try doing that on PAYE. AS a married person I can almost elliminate my tax bill. Also I pay far less PRSI than on PAYE.

I was told you can't claim for the journey to the office, or home from it but any journeys other than that. So if you were working on site I couldn't claim for that. Which was bummer since it was 50 miles away.

Where did you your accounts done for that? PM will yah?

I think that Mr. Burns is writing off the travel as directors expenses. He then pays himself a wage which is much smaller and this then avoids tax. As his 2nd director he probably bungs his wife a few € and writes that off too. All nice and legal.
