Suspicious call from Sky

I have a full family package subscription with Sky. A got a strange telephone call from SKY lasts night asking if I had digital or satellite subscription. I said yes I had a sky subscription - obviously he must have known this already as he knew my name. Anyway - he proceeded to tell me that UTV and CH4 were now available to Irish customers at no extra cost. Gave me the tuning details but said that an engineer would have to come out to tune them in (at a cost). Being suspicious I asked him how long had sky being offering UTV and CH4 to Irish customers - he said it was only a very recent addition. He told me to call sky customer service for further detail. Haven't called them yet.

Any of you guys hear about this. Sounds a bid strange to me.

    emmm, that is really suss.

    1. Sky do not offer these channels in ROI. Period.
    2. If (or when) they do, they will be turned on 'automatically'
    3. There is no reason for Sky to call to you ever (unless your equipment breaks down, in which case you'd initiate the call).

Not wanting to alarm you, but is somebody trying to establish when you will be out - so they can break in?

the guy who replied 1st was right...never do SKY send out engineers like that , they just update your box by software, I'd alert the guards if I were in your shoes mate, very suspicious!

Maybe they were setting you up to get your credit card details but bailed out when you got suspicious

Names can be figured out from the phone book and/or electroral register.

And I assume your Sat-disk is visable to passing motorist/pedestrians.

Did you get Caller-ID from the call, your phone must have the last ten calls recieved.

Report this to Sky in the first place, and if they dis-own the call, inform the Gardai.

Looks like they're trying it on with NTL customers too http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=157157

Jpoam, welcome to Boards. There are a number of rules we have here and you might like to start by reading the charter. Some rules apply across boards and one of them is that we don't drag up old threads. This is because the problem in the original post may have been long solved. For example Channel 4 is now offered on the Irish electronic programme guide

As is usual in these cases I'll be closing the thread. If there's a new issue you might want to start a new thread describing the problem. I normally take no further action but if a poster were to make a habit of dragging up old threads they might be warned or banned.
