I have just received my bi-monthly bill from Eircom. On it, listed under Other Charges and Miscellaneous is a Chargecard administration charge of €1. I only have my line rental with them so what on earth is this other €1 for? My mum has a seperate line in the house and was also charged this extra €1

Guess what? Even worse: There is a 60 cents charge from Eircom on my Mum's visa card. She never authorized Eircom to use her Visa account. Eircom Customer Service told her that it was probably for an Eircom chargecard. She does not have one. As she pointed out, 60 cents multiplied by a few thousand unwitting customers is a lot of money.

We miust follow this up. If you get any information or response, please post it. I will do the same.

    I found this:

Apparently the Irish Times had a report on the 23rd April along these lines:
... Eircom will have to refund a new fee to more than 10,000 customers after it introduced the charge before notifying customers. The fee relates to an administrative charge for the company's so-called charge card service. The amount of the fee was EUR0.50 plus VAT.
I have not got the precise reference and have to check the report. It looks as if there is an actual figure that the 60 cents can be multiplied by. i.e. 10,000

Still no explanation of how they managed to use my Mum's visa card or how they can possibly compensate for that.

She never authorized Eircom to use her Visa account

Does your mother have an AIB Visa?

If so, they did offer (and may still) a combined VISA/Eircom Charge Card. If she is an AIB customer, I'd say she ticked a box for this on her application form and forgot. I'd imagine a few others did likewise.

Thanks for the info. I'll follow this up.

Go to the Eircom website and go to customer services and general enquiries and get them to remove the chargecard thing from your account. Apparantly they charge 50c per month if you DON'T use it!!!

    Thanks.

Did you get any confirmation from them that your card has been cancelled? I have tried cancelling things before with Eircom and my experience has been that nothing is as simple as they say.

Did you actually apply for a chargecard or was it bundled with your AIB visa card like the previous poster suggested?

I've just had a confirmation e-mail that the chargecard has been deleted from the accounts I specified. I'll double check my next bill just to make sure.

They offered the card when I was in an Eircom shop, no mention of the charge if you don't use it of course, and I was stupid enough to take it. I'll know better in future! ;)

Apparently, so will they. Having to pay back everyone they charged because they failed to advise the customer of the charge should act as a useful reminder.
