I'm heading on over to the states for the summer, but I'm wondering if I'll be able to bring over and play my dvd's

I'm sure I could sort out the dvd player and make it mutliregion, I'm a little more worried about the tv. Do you guys know if it's standard to make tv's over there pal and ntsc compatable? Or, like my old tv here, will it just play in black and white?

In most cases US tvs will not display 625/50 pictures at all. US dvd players are not compatible either as a rule and there is not a big demand for multi-region over there.

thanks for that, looks like I'll have to make do watching them on the pc/laptop for the summer :/

    look for APEX players.
they're cheap and they play PAL/Regions etc etc

lots of choice over there and you can probably pick up something for less than $100

Is an APEX player just a dvd player?
That wont be any use unless it has a built in screen. The American tvs aren't PAL compatible.

apex do portable dvd players with screen in Circuit City and best buy shops for less than $200 iirc

I can already play the movies on my computer, it was the tv aspect of it that I was more worried about :s

Thanks for the help regards the apex players though :)

If the player is connected to the tv via a component lead set it should work with any TV in the states. It might be worth a try !

BTW a quick look at the spec of some US sets shows compatibility with certain PAL standards including our beloved 625/50 system in a lot of cases. Just to clarify when I refer to PAL i mean only the field frequency of 50 or 60Hz. DVD's of course do not contain colour encoding.

Region 2 does not have to be PAL 50 they could also be PAL 60 which should play OK through a scart socket or component.
