Apparently the German Pay TV company 'Premiere' is making its services available outside of Germany from June this year.

If this is true it should open the floodgates for 'legal cross border' subscriptions for foreign channels.

With a bit of luck Sky shall follow.

    NOTE ********************Apparently !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Premiere have a great package. This is truely great news. I wouldnt mind paying for their package as opposed to sky.

*edit* It would be nice to see sky follow suit I spose but I cant see Rupert the Bear being happy about having an NDS cam out there.

He perfectly happy, as long as you have a digibox. Sky Italia is turning off dual encryption and then only Sky Italia digiboxes with NDS cam will work.

Sky of course want to deal with each market/country separately to give greater flixibility to charge more. Also to wipe out competion

    No news here

I think sky italia running in Seca2 is to be ended next May. There is however a lot of boxes that will need replacing so whatever way sky tackles the replacing of them, do they just ship them an nds cam and appropiate card for the ci slot on their existing recievers or will they go and replace the whole lot?

It would be nice to be able to choose what tv package one could watch no matter where they are in Europe.

There is NO separated NDS cam for satellite. There is an NDS cable TV POD for USA, but not compatible.

Yes people will be getting Digiboxes. A lot already have.

There has been some discussion as to what happens if you try SW update ater pointing UK/Irl box at SkyItalia on Hotbird and editing the Default Transponder in Installer menu. Does it have Italian menus afterward?

    Or vice versa.

Current speculation is that the difference in Italia, Mexico, UK etc is set at factory via the slot at back. That such an attempted update will either be ignored or result in a trashed box.

    Anyone want to try it?

I know there is no NDS cam. It would be a nice solution however for people who wish to watch and subscribe to the sky package without having the digibox and who are not in countries where sky is currently offered. But as you rightly pointed out sky wont want this unless its going into a digibox. And then their is their wish to wipe out the opposition.

Which is why only EU or national legislation will force them to OTA upgrade existing digibox for Diseqc 1.0 and Diseqc 1.2 and more symbol rates and enable slot at back for other CAMs and let Sky+ record non Sky EPG etc.

The existing Digibox and Sky+ can do most or all of this just with a new Sky Software version automatic update, but unless forced to they never will
as it would put them in a less monopolistic situation.

I don't understand why no regulator stands up to them.

(I know you know there is no CAM, I made my comment for any newbies reading :-) )

As the Sky DigiBox is and always has been branded as a SKY TV receiver I doubt they could be forced to change the software to allow it to be used for other packages..... it'd be hard to argue you didn't know it was only to be used for watching Sky's packages.

Yeah, but how much of it is in English? Viasat, Canal Digitaal, etc all show programmes in the original language, which I doubt that Premiere does, unless it has an extra audio channel with the original soundtrack 'simulcast'. Sport is less of a problem, you can turn down the sound and turn on Five Live.

All PPV channels have dual sound carrier, most of the film channels, too. With Bundesliga fussball coverage you can switch off the commentator, amd with english premier league soccer you can choose between german and english commentary.

Premiere does offer movies simulcast in various languages. The prices are moderate - 23 Euro for either the Sport or the Movie packages or 33 Euro for both and 43 Euro for a package including a further 20 or so channels. There is a deal going at present with a 1 Euro received. Compared with Rupert the Robber, this is a great deal.
Although I live in Germany I am forced to take the Robbers package as I want access to the Irish TV and radio channels. If only these would follow the BBC and go FTA I think the Robber Baron would lose a lot of subs in Ireland (that are being viewed in Europe!).
