pathname.exe problem

Have noticed that my work computer has been slow to open applications for the past month or so, and defragged my drives, uninstalled old apps in the hope of fixing this. nothing worked, but recently i started noticing that when i went to log off a window came up saying that pathname.exe needed to close.

so i did a bit of googling and found that this file can be linked to a trojan but also exists normally. this morning i bit the bullet and ended the process in task manager and everything speeded up. does this mean the pc has been infected by a trojan and if so, how can i get rid of it seeing as norton doesn't detect it (i scan every day)

    any help would be great

You can find some procedures for removing this threat here. If I was you I'd check the registry to be sure this is what you have. See the bottom of the linked page for what to look for.

well after checking with techie guy i know, and checking a few other pcs i deleted the file and cleaned the registry with the info on the page that Adeptus posted (thanks btw)

can't understand how norton didn't catch it though when its a known trojan. copied it onto a floppy and scanned that and it didn't show up there either.
