This is second hand info but I know all parties concerned well and if the details aren't 100% the plot is.

Friend gets NTL's 600k service installed recently, in Knocklyon area and is happy. Get's a phone call around 9pm one night from "NTL rep" telling him he has the 600k but they are doing a special on 1meg upgrades, only €25 a month (yes, €15 cheaper than the 600k) and would he be interested. Of course he would! She says they need to send a guy out to change the modem, the only extra cost involved, and to do this she needs his credit card number AND the verification number off the back of it. He thought something was up and as it happened another friend, who knew I upgraded to the 1 meg was there to tell him that it is just a software upgrade for the modem and is done over the network. When asked why it couldn't be charged to his bill she had answers ready and even gave him a mobile number to ring if he decided to go ahead with it.
    Worrying things about this are:
How did she get his phone number?
How did she know he had the 600k service?

It seems to point to an inside job either within NTL or with ICL who do the installations for them.

Needless to say, don't ever give credit card details to anybody who rings you. At the very least ring them back at the company they claim to be from, not at the number they give you.

Scammee was reporting the episode to NTL. No heroes required here, just a bit of common sense.
