Thermal Baths are great - Szenchini (Yellow subway line) are probably the best
    Gellert Baths also good.

Loadsa outdoor bars opening at this time of year :
(alhough it can be still a little cold after 10pm)
    Zold Pardon (www.zp.hu)
    Cafe del Rio
    Rom Kert
Szoda Kert (excellent but maybe not open this year)

    Irish Bars:
Becketts - Used to be great but crap now
Irish Cat - Not really irish clientelle but great talent

Sziget (Europes answer to Glastonbury) concert is on in August (4th -> 11th)
    www.sziget.hu
    It's excellent !

Spend about 3 days seeing Budapest - szechenyi baths, parliament building, the castle, heroes square. take a walk up to the top of gellert hill to the citadella for amazing views of the city, or if you're lazy you can get a bus from moskva ter.
Margit sziget (sziget means island) is a great place to stroll around on a sunny afternoon.

there are loads of outdoor bars in really cool locations, like the centre courtyards of old apartment buildings, but many are not visible from the street so ask around.

Lake Balaton is a must see, and maybe visit Eger or Pecs. Szentendre is close to budapest, and its wonderful little town, despite being very touristy. Travelling aroung Hungary is easy, and very cheap on public transport. train fares are paid by the kilometre, the maximum fare is about 12 euros.

I was at the sziget festival last year, and will be again this year. Highly recommended. Get a day pass at the gates if you are in budapest at that time.

Is it expensive over there ?? How much money would be needed for a week. Also how much is a beer :)

    Chief.

No, compared to here its a lot cheaper, especially away from the touristy areas. A beer will cost anything from 70c to 2 euros, average is about 1.50 or so. Dreher is the most popular local beer, and its nice too.
Most bars have a big sign with prices and most restaurants have a menu outside with prices so you can check before you go in.
Also a nice meal can be had for less than a tenner, including a drink and a tip.

I'll be in Budapest the second week of august and I'm looking to find a place that's close to all the pubs / sites ect.

Can anyone recommend places to see / things to do while in Budapest.

What district would i be best to stay in as I will have no car with me?

Thank you in advance for your help.

dont forget to see the severed hand of one of the first leaders, its in the crypt in one of the cathradials. put in a coin and it lights up and plays a song!

the chair lift is good-any guide book should show you where!, about twenty mins long well good for pics!

just ignore the drunk hobos, in the summmer there can be a lot of them.

i also recommend a cruise on the river, and in the summer, if you have a day to spare you can take a 2 hr hydrofoil ride to vianna down the danube!

I have been to Hungay twice, in Budapest and Balaton....I am not into museums, art, etc....all I can say is that you have probably got the most awesome women in world there....they alone are already a very good reason to go to Hungary...

Budapest is just GORGEOUS! I've been there several times. You can hardly go wrong, really. The main thing I would recommend is to go away from the touristy places. If you didn't know - Budapest is a combined name for Hungary's "two capitals" - Buda and Pest, on opposite sides of the river. Pest is the more famous, so Buda is consequently a must see! It's less touristy, lots to see in terms of history and architecture. Pest is equally nice, a little more "big city" feeling. :)

Here is photo, overlooking Pest - you can see Buda across the river, gorgeous... YAY BALKANS :D:
