woah, i think that'd feel kinda weird. I think for the first 20 minutes id find it very hard to take him seriously, i'd always be expecting him to come out with some hilarious joke or facial expression

I may be wrong but isn't this film by Michel Gondry? His music videos were the best ever I reckon, but 'human nature' left me cold. I'd love if this was a great film though

You're absolutely right. And what's even better it was written by Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation writer).

"Human Nature" was also written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry.

so is the film any good?? i know what its about and i know there is loads of stars in it, but i havent heard if its good or bad. i do like Jim Carry in serious roles. he was good in the trueman show and the majastic and kate winslet is brilliant what ever role she is in. so is this film a hit or a miss????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,872 ✭✭✭segadreamcast

Evening Herald gave it five stars - which is a genuine rarity in that newspaper. However generally I find their reviews to be somewhat off the mark - and their reviewer to be almost elitist with his choices.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭revolver2k

elitist is one way to put it....

The man gave kangaroo Jack 4 out of 5 stars ffs :p

But i saw eternal sunshine today and loved it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭voxpop

is it really goood good or just a kinda soppy love story ??
The synopsis sounds kinda like 21 grams without the tragety i.e. people meeting by strange fate and falling in love (simplistic view but you get my meaning )

I'm going to see this tonight. Sounds promising...

I actually like Jim Carey, whether he's making faces or not.

He gives virtually every arthouse movie 4-5 stars. Then he tries to compensate by occasionally giving mainstream films high marks because of the amount of complaints the Herald receive about his reviews (at least three of which were from me).

Yeah I know, but it's the only paper they'll deliver to my house - so I don't have much alternative. You're right though - I am wasting my time...I should really be complaining about Miriam Lee's column. Most (if not all) of her articles every week end with '!'. How she got into a newspaper is beyond me.

I saw the movie and enjoyed it thoroughly.

It's a great movie, would recommend it to anyone. Possibly Jim Carey's best performance. The supporting cast are very good too. Kate Winslet surpised me with her performance, I usually don't like her.
As for, is it a "soppy love story"? It's a love story but it's really good and off the wall. If you liked "Being John Malkovich" you should like this.
mmm Kristen Dunst dancing on a bed... If for no other reason go for that scene alone.

I went to see that movie in Bray last night, the cinema had about 20 people in it, I was with a group of 5 and after an hour of that rubbish we all walked out, we turned around to see everyone else was following us, it is rubbish, he should stick to comedy

Yeah, a few people left the cinema when i went to see it too.

It's just one of those things, either you get it or you don't.

The movie's great in my opinion, direction, writing, acting is all fantastic. Carey's brilliant and understated, Mark Ruffalo looks like one to watch and yes, Kirsten Dunst dancing on a bed can never grow old....

Great movie. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Superb movie - wonderfully directed. It may not be to everyone's taste, but you can't call it "rubbish" without showing ignorance about film-making techniques. I'd wonder what Gothique would actually consider a good movie. Fair enough if you do't like it - it doesn't give it a bad label.

Carey shows that, if needs be, he can act. They all can for that matter. It's the wonderful oddness and yet, the sweet romance, that works for me. The only quibble I have, and it's a minor one is that
I didn't particularly like the fact that we knew that the beginning of the movie takes place after much of the rest of the movie. It became clear pretty early on, when Joel gave a date, that we had seen them meeting for the second "first" time.

Saw this on Friday or something. It's really nice. The girlfriend had no idea what was going on, but it's defo worth seeing!!

    Check it out...

Brilliant film. Carey and Winslet have never been better.

I was especially worried that Winslets' career was going straight downhill after her portrayal of the "tough" journalist in David Gale.

Kauffman is a genius. Once again he has written a really clever movie that is gripping and thought-provoking throughout. This is the best movie I have seen exploring what makes us love someone, make us want to spend all our time with them while they are simultaneously the most irritating and annoying person we know! :)

If I had 3 thumbs Id give it 3 thumbs up , but I dont so your going to have to settle for 2 thumbs , two big toes and a willy. Fantastic movie. Really well acted, great story and skillfully crafted , some great imagry too...
the Faces with no features when the memories are being wiped, oh and kates winsletts hair !

Yeah, I loved it. I have never seen a movie give such a realistic depiction of what relationships are really like. Although it had the wierd bits, this is one of the most realistic films I have ever seen.

I have never seen a movie give such a realistic depiction of what relationships are really like.
kaufman said that he wanted to depict a more realistic relationship after he had grown up beleiving that relationships were like those in the movies and had spent many years being dissapointed.

i loved this film. ive even seen it twice already and i may see it a third time in the cinema, which i rarely do.
the techniques that gondry used were, like his music videos, brilliant.
its up there with The Station Agent as my favourite films of the year so far.

Adaptation and Being John Malkovich were class but this was a bit sh*t. Give it a miss unless you're a big Kaufman fan.
    1 out of 5.

Great film, loved it, can't recommend it enough to people who enjoy these type of films.

If you like action flicks and only want to see Jim Carrey doing "funny stuff" don't go and see it, you'll need to use your brain when you're watching this.

No one mentioned him in Man On The Moon in this thread yet, he was brilliant in that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Saw it last night, and absolutely loved it. Its definitely in my top 3 of the year so far. Great story, some excellent comedy (particularly the childhood memories), great script and fantastic acting.

I also loved the imagery .... blurred faces, the lights switching off in the bookshop as Joel's world caves in, the crumbling house.... superb stuff.

Excellent movie, but don't go along if you expect to see Carrey pulling faces and making stupid noises for a couple of hours (like Gothique obviously did).

I loved this movie, it was simply brilliant. The photography in the whole movie was spot on, and the storyline was perfect :)

Brilliant film - seems to be the popular concensus :D

The one thing I didn't get is
Near the end in his memories Clemintine tells him to "meet me in Montauk" which explains why he impulsively jumps on the train at the start. It was just the Clementine in his head who told him that - not actually the real Clementine - how did the real Clementine also know to go to Montauk when she herself also had her mind wiped and either way wouldn't have been privy to what wen on in Josh's head?

Obviously maybe she went through the same struggle when she was having her mind wiped and came to the same conclusion - but that seems unlikely to me unless she went through the same complications as he did while having her mind wiped

    Any help would be appreciated:confused:

Maybe he knew she had a prior appointment there. Something subconscious he picked up at some point. a note on a diary or a journal.

Fantastic movie by the way. my favourite for a long time. carrey's best.

The 'complications' Joel experienced stemmed from the fact that in erasing his memories of her, he remembered all the things he loved about her, and he decided he didn't want to forget about her completely.

Now, maybe I'm too much of an old romantic, but I'd like to think that Clementine went through a similar process. Love being a two-way thing and all that.

I guess this is supported by her reaction to Frodo's recital of Joel's speech to her on the ice - she at least had some memory of this original speech

Brilliant film, cant recommend it enough to anyone who likes films that make you think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

I had the same thought about all that as ObeyGiant did. It made sense.
Montauk in particular was special because it's where they met, and it was also the very last memory that was wiped from them (seeing as they go in reverse order) - but that was obvious

One of the best films I have ever seen. Def the best this year for me. Carey and Winslet were superb. Imo Carey should stick to serious acting and forget comedy

If you haven’t seen it go... NOW.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 cringe-at-me

Definitely the best movie of 2004, so far. Great Film. Everyone was brilliant in it and the story was surprisingly not what i thought it would be. I didn't think it would be about the process of what he was going through, but the results, instead. I was proven wrong, thankfully. Kate Winslet and Kirsten Dunst really did prove themselves in this film. Kirsten just needs to avoid the teen fliks from now on and she'll probably have a great career ahead of her.

Finally went to see it today and have to say I was spellbound.

Great performance from Carrey and I'm not his biggest fan.

And will Elijah Wood ever not be Frodo? ;)

Yeah I saw Dogville when it came out and a good few people walked out of that as well. Amazing how genuinly different, interesting and challenging films have that effect on ignorant herd-ruled cabbages such as yourseflf.

I saw the film last night. After the first 10-15 minutes I thought, what the hell is this steaming pile? I was contimplating leaving but since I have never done that yet I stuck it out til the end. And boy am I glad I did. It's definately the best film I've seen in ages. It original and interesting. I'm not gonna pretend I know anything about Imagery or Camera work cause I don't, but I was gripped from the 15th minute on. Superb. I'm not to sure if it was a great performance by Carrey though or was it just that he was playing a good part. He did it for me though. Thought Kate and Kirsten looked pretty hot in the flick also.
