    In today's Irish Independent:
Policy calls for gay couple rights

A POLICY document spelling out Fine Gael's commitment to establishing partnership rights for same-sex couples and cohabiting heterosexual couples will be published shortly.

The party's equality spokesperson, Senator Sheila Terry, told the Ard-Fheis that it had long been Fine Gael policy to extend rights in the areas of property and succession.

She said she was completing a comprehensive document that "will take this further and give gay couples full equality before the law on issues like tax, property rights, next of kin and in a number of other areas".

Sen Terry said: "As part of Fine Gael's agenda to strengthen families in all their modern forms, we recognise that Ireland needs a modern, social legislative base to give the necessary protection to those whose families fall outside the traditional nuclear family model."

"Marriage will always be the choice for the majority of people in this country and Fine Gael fully supports this," she added.
Interesting, although FG seem to have a habit, of late, of promising the sun, moon, stars, and all the dark matter inbetween in a bid to try and grab some votes. Interesting that the last two paragraphs of the article switch back to the traditional view of marriage and families - presumably in an effort not to alienate their more conservative voters...

At least all parties appear to be on the same track, but lets not forget, it was Labour's idea first!
