written, recorded and released around the same time but 2 very different albums...

i think deliverance is slightly better but they're both brilliant!

which one would you go for?

    Probably Damnation.
Deliverance sound a bit stangant, creatively.

damnation.. while I appreciate the talent in opeth I still haven't gotten into their heavier side

Good god that is a tough one. I think I'll go for Deliverance because I like Opeth for their variation of mellow and heavy music. Damnation doesn't have that.

Damnation..... its the far superior album.

AW (or should that be KH?:p) is dead right, its not close to Blackwater Park, and it doesnt add anything new to the heavy sound.

I know I hated it at first (i could dredge up that post i made a long time ago when i bought it....) but it has grown on me, becoming one of my fav albums evar.

I like Deliverance.. It's nice and heavy, but sounds formulatic at points.
    Damnation tbh.

Give me another Still Life or Orchid tbh

Deliverence, I like to have opeths light and heavy stuff on one album tho still nowhere as good as blackwater park or sill life.

I understand why people would say Deliverance, as part of the appeal of Opeth is them 'Going through the motions' musically, and blending in the heavy and mellow parts, and Damnation was certainly lacking in that department.

But overall, I just think that Deliverance was completely lacking any originality at all, and that's just not good for Opeth as they're definetly an original band. So seeing them stuck in a rut is just not a good thing.

no point in starting another thread so i'll just do it here...

what about their best heavy to light/light to heavy parts?

i love the end of the leper affinity where the piano kicks... its amazing...and the intro to the moor!

As far as light to heavy bits goes, 'to bid you farewell' cant be beaten, by any song, ever. Huge 6 or 7 minute build up capped off with an excellent 3 minute heavy part, and another slow outro, just such an amasing build up no song has topped it, or came close, yet.

Yeah, I'd probably say To Bid You Farewell too.
The Moor is also quite excellent.

I love all the opeth albums. Between those two Deliverance is my favourite. Both are good. But Blackwater park is still my favourite :) perfection from start to finish. Thats just my two cents neway..

I have to ask, how many of you are fans of Opeth because "OMG, IT'S FAST AND THEN SLOW LOL TBH"

    Not many I'd imagine.
I'd say it's more due to Opeth's songwriting, and their dynamics rather than just "Fast Then Slow" if you get my meaning. Overall they do write great songs, but it's the flow or progression of the song that people are reffering to here, if being a bit blurt about it.

I like them because they do amasing build ups, which really make a song, and opeth have some seriously great build up's all over the place which most bands only do 1 build up worth noting in their career's, makes them brilliant to listen to and very unique, not many progressive metal bands about, I only know Opeth, and the local band 'odium halo', both are excellent.
