Why did they change the name to this?

They should either leave it the way it was or change it to RTE2, the way it should be. Like "BBC2".

Er, that might have been because it was called RTE2 before that.

Going by this anyway it appears the official name is now 'RTE N2' rather than 'network'?

the reason why they changed it cause when RTE incresed the licence fee AGAIN, the public was saying with all that money RTE are getting the product is crap. so RTE decided, just so everyone is aware the Network 2 is apart of RTE to make it RTE NETWORK 2 and it has done this with 2FM, and all the other radio stations they have. But they havent dont it to TG4 for some reason.

But it's not separate from RTÉ.

I remember when they changed from RTÉ 2 to Network 2, there was a lot of hype about how it was a brand new station when, in fact, it was the same thing with a different name.

I know, but RTE wanted everyone to relise that Network 2, and 2fm are apart of RTE because people were e-mailing in where does all the money go on RTE1 and RTE radio 1. so they put RTE on Network 2 to show what the licence fee is paying for.

I wouldn't be surprised if eventually the "Network" part was phased out, and the RTE 2 name brought back in.

They changed the name, but they really changed the outlook of the channel. With RTÉ 2, out went Film Board of Canada films, the Beachcombers and Hallas and Batchelor cartoons. With Network 2 in came a 3 hour Dempsey's Den (was 2 hours on RTÉ 1), Jo Maxi, Home and Away, most of the US imports and nearly all of the sport.

RTÉ 2 was a waste of frequencies in 1988, effectively a dead duck thanks to Johnny Logon in 1980, and they really did a good job in relauching the 2nd channel. Since then, it has been tinkered with, tried RTÉ branding, then ditched it, then brought it back.

The official name of the channel is "RTÉ Network 2"
RTÉ N2 is just the logo, but its rarely heard that an announcer on the channel will say N2. If they did, it just sounds like Finglas to Ashbourne.

    "Your're watching Kilshane Cross".....

It started off as rte 2
It was then changed to network two around 1990ish
then a year or two ago the changed it to n2 with a slight change of image

then when the annoying little logos in the top left corner came up it was changed to rte n2

On the topic itself, is RTE so:

    a) out of touch with its audience to believe that people actually think Network 2 and 2 FM are not RTE, and are not funded by licence fees

    b) paranoid that they have felt the need to force the message down our throats that the licence fee pays for these as well?

    c) unimaginative to think that the best was to improve 'perceived value' of the licence is to conduct a re-branding (and not to make the required difference through programming spend)

    We were poor.
    I called it '2'
    The alternative was '1'

Ah, luxury. When I was small the alternative to "one" (or or tee eee) was static.

I suspect that the answers to the three questions posed by Genghis are all a hearty yes. I can picture some guy in Montrose doing the all about perception speech. We are, after all, talking about people who seem happy to blow the budget on buying in as much US drama as they can to stop TV3 getting it and putting it on after midnight so no-one gets to see it.

    The RTE branding

I like the fact that Lyric, RnaG and 2fm wheren't so RTE.

I mean the could have really copied the BBC and call their radio stations

    RTE 1, RTE 2, RTE 3 and RTE4. (I feel a song coming on)

As for poor old RTE Network N 2.

Yes I remember thinking I was getting a new channel back in 88, I grew up with only 2 and then the gave me 2 WOOO WHO.

But the fact that Dempsey's Den went out for 3 HOURS was great. (Have tried to tell people that it used to be on RTE One after Live at 3 but no one beleived me :( )

Thelma And Dreke did a live link up during the first week of NETWORK 2.

    Anyway of the point.

I just don't like this new RTE Network 2 GRRR GRRR. Give me back N2. with a proper comedy night, when most of the time the schedule was a schedule. But this RTE Network 2. It could be the number 2 channel if it wanted.

RTE 2 back in the 80 with Coro St yeah they had it first (I give it 3 out of 10)
Network 2 with the den (10/10 just for the den in the good aul days, remember Zig and Zag, tearing up. Even the innovation of 1992 and the olmpic games, a sports channel)
N2 (Cool Icon/Symbol the Number 2 thingy ma jig, Friends and the 90's, NEWS 2 and DFTG when it was good, Rodge and Podge they were on the right track at one stage)
    RTE N2 (Uhhh!)

Oh and they don't get their hand on TG4 because TG4 is funded by the exchequer in the main with a small amount coming from RTE.

The man that did wonders with TG4 is making a mess of RTE (What the hell are u doing Cathal Goan?)

Didn't it come out there a couple of years ago that they were blowing their budget on massively overpaid muppets like Pat Kenny, Gay Byrne etc ?

That looks like a schedule of when The Den was on holidays or the summer.
From 1988, it was 2:30 Bosco and 3:00 Dempseys Den. That lasted for quite a few years. In the summer months Bosco appeared later while the lads legged it.
