afer the fairly recent RIAA crack down on Kazaa users in America, i was wondering, what is the deal over here? Can you be punished by any European group or american group over here in Ireland if you are caught sharing copyrighted material through any p2p program or is anyone even checking? Obviously its illegal but is there any measures to prevent it here? Do the RIAA have authority overseas?

The day I stop sharing files is the day I stop using computers. The record companies had it coming to them. They have been ripping people off for years. It's about time the fatcats got some payback.

Most of the music I download is music I wouldn't buy anyway. It's nice to have a good selection though. As for movies i'd still buy dvd's. The quality of downloaded movies isn't the best and I think 20 quid for a multi million dollar film that took nearly a year or more to make is a fair price rather than 20 quid for an music album thrown together in a few months for next to nothing.

Don't know if the RIAA have any authority here but it doesn't bother me. Their scare tactics won't stop most people sharing.

imo the file sharers have done their damage. i remember when they shut napster down, i never bothered to buy music again, eventually kazaa came along and all was well, ive aborted kazaa and my winmx is fux0red but ill find something. anyone have any advice on what apps to use to fileshare.

I agree that the companies have it coming to them. I watched a little feature about file sharing on prime time, and it was very interesting, there was a young gentleman on and a rep. from some record company, and the young gentleman kicked his ass in the debate. he raised excellent points about how kids theese days have mobiles etc, when in the past this money was spent on musak. he also stated that there is no legal alternative in ireland, even with irelands high broadband uptake. he also said that the music companies wern't doing enough to embrace the new technology, basically he won lol :D

[edit] For fear of this being closed for warez discussion I've removed the link. Google soulseek.[/edit]

I find usefull. I used to buy tons of music but after seeing online prices compare to retail outlets the amount of cd's has decreased considerably.

    Recording Industry Association of America.
At most they can alert your isp to which you can quit what you're doing or deny all knowledge.

This has been discussed at length and I'm sure sceptre knows alot about the law. I'm sure he's one of those law... talking guys.

Also read through these a bit.

Soulseek is the biz. I mainly use it to find music by Irish bands from the 80s, early 90s - stuff that I grew up listening to. Power of Dreams, Emotional Fish, Stunning Cactus World news etc.

This is very hard to find in the shops and I don't feel guilty downloading it. I also use it to find new albums and if they are any good usually buy the real thing.

It is also useful to get pre-releases of forthcoming albums. For instance I have the upcoming badly drawn boy album a few months ahead of time(I will still prob buy it though)

Well, the EU recently passed a law allowing the European Music agency to raid your home without Garda presence, seize your property, and freeze your assets if they suspect you of copyright infringement. The law has yet to be implemented here in Ireland (it must be done in the next 22 months), but it is only a matter of time, sadly.

If you're gonna file-share in the future, you'd better make damn sure its anonymous.

    lol
how many file sharers are there in Europe?!
How could they possilbly catch even 1% of the people

IRMA (the Irish music association) have already started to prepare to issue legal precedings against people in Ireland for music sharing/downloading.

A fine of €149 per song.

Yeah, maybe the will only take 1% of people to court and win ..... but what if you're that 1% ??? Worth the risk ?

    Your choice of course.

    Excellent! I owe 3559x149 = 530,291EUR .. there goes any chance of a mortgage.

Don't use any of the mainstream applications. Kazaa or its variations. Chance are they will target these first.

I would guess you are at less risk if you get a dynamic ip address. Considering the level of service from the ISPS I would imagine they probably don't store a username to IP address for each login.

If I can see your machine to copy the file then I can find out who you are. Unless your clever, which less then 1% are.

Theft is theft. But if you are doing it because then you don't like what the RIAA are doing, then stop supporting the companies that are supporting the RIAA.

But don't whine because you get caught for breaking the law. There are literally tons of free music out there.

just a technical note, turning off firewalls is a bad idea. better to pinhole your firewall at the appropriate port. I had to do this on the broadband router, but it works a treat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭JackKelly

    im not whining!
Of course theft is theft and pirating is pirating. There is no point in even trying to defend filesharing.its illegal!but most people still do it.As for Kazaa, its a mess already. It took me less than a day to find the 10 or so,main, popular file sharing apps so i doubt that they will limit themselves only to kazaa.

I don't want to turn this into a dodgy thread, but how is it that the RIAA catch/caught people?

Odd that. Smashing Pumpkins are listed. But they released their last ever album exclusively for free download due to their despise of record companies (in particular Virgin, with whom they were held to a ridiculous contract). Billy Corgan has also spoken out several times in support for file-sharing as it introduces people to more music/bands, who receive their money when they tour.

Anywho, just pointing out that that list isn't entirely up to date...

AFAIK, they only catch people sharing. If you share nothing, and just happened to be a leecher, I don't think they could catch you....

Through your ip by using monitoring software on various p2p apps that are out there.
Obviously they have targeted the big ones like kazaa, problem for them is that there are too many lawsuits which would take a 1000 years to sue everyone of the reputedly 60 million or so who use these apps worldwide :)

Hence scare-mongering through sueing a sample of innocent citizens who have not being convicted of a single copyright offence under law but settled out of court due to fear of lawyer expenses.

The only way to avoid detection is either stop leeching/sharing (dl/upl) or use anonymous p2p apps which have not evolved mainstream yet.
    Excellent! I owe 3559x149 = 530,291EUR .. there goes any chance of a mortgage.

Correction, the fine is supposed to be €1,900 per track(accordig to primetime) hence that €6.7m mansion you planned have to be put on hold for a bit :):)

is there any encryption software available to defeat dawn raids by police?

Its not actually illegal. Its only illegal if people share copyrighted material which the person does not have a licence to broadcast/copy/play etc. Filesharing itself is 100% legal and should be encouraged. Its the filesharing of items which are not supppose to be shared that should be stopped.

For me i havent downloaded anything in months. Anything I have downloaded i have usually actually found myself buying CDs for as I liked the stuff. So if anything downloading has actually increased my music tastes and encouraged me to buy more and vaird music. Although I buy online to save money. I dont like having to spend silly amounts in shops. If CDs were actually properly prices and not a silly €25's I would buy more of them Id say.

Also, Artists make their money through tours not CDs. The record company make money from CDs. The artists thremselves only make money through their tours/gigs and merchandising.

File sharing is legal, the bittorrent network evolved from demand for distro sharing amongst the Linux community.

Sharing music against the artist's/label's permission is, however, very much illegal.

As for the dawn raids, its been discussed before, get one of these

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/dban/

Also a great way to make sure you've killed that virus.
