Or you could just tactfully explain that you don't think it's working out and that you want to call it off. Be polite, but firm. It might suck for him for a while, but I imagine he's a big boy now and will be able to handle it.

Whatever you do, don't dump him with a text message!! You would hurt him much more that if you tell him straight in his face, which I believe is always the best way to leave someone.

You're going to be a bitch either way. There is no way to dump someone, and come out of it smelling of roses. The fact of the matter is they want you, and your telling them they can't have you.

Just be firm, make sure (s)he understands.
Be sensitive, its going to be hard for them - but keep your distance, the last thing you want to do is be over-nice. They're going to be looking for a chink in your armour; a sign that theres still a chance, you can't give that idea, it'll mess with their head.
...and order a short not a pint - you want the option of a quick escape if things get messy/awkard/nasty/uncomfortable.

Just be honest with the guy and dont give him and reason that's untrue and makes it easier for you. And definetly don't use the "we need a break line"
