Bonjela (mouth ulcer) Issues

I've been getting mouth ulcers for most of my life at the moment, and decided to go out and purchase some of this Bonjela stuff. Seems to be the standard medicine that everyone's using.

But I'm not sure it's having any positive affects whatsoever.

When I apply this gel to my ulcers, it puts them in extreme agonising pain, and even makes them start to bleed! I mean what the hell is with that??
Its supposed to relieve pain, and I'm pretty damn sure that making it bleed will not make it heal quicker!

Has anyone had similar problems with this Bonjela stuff?

Am I using it wrong? It just doesn't make sense.

Use a toothpaste free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate :). I'd been getting mouth ulcers for years for no apparent reason, but a with a little reading and testing I found this to be the culprit. You'll still get mouth ulcers, but not nearly as often as before, and they're much smaller.

Sensodine F Original is free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

Do exactly what Nuphor says on the toothpaste.

I switched to a sodium lauryl sulfate - free toothpaste and I have far fewer mouth ulcers than ever before.

You can buy Vicks Chloraseptic throat spray if your ulcers are bad - it's an antiseptic with anaesthetic properties - stings like bejaysus when you spray it on first, then the area goes numb and it'll give you some relief.

In addition, if you're getting chronic mouth ulcers, try taking a month's vitamin course - multibionta for instance - cut out very spicy foods, avoid crisps, switch toothpaste. Before you brush your teeth every morning and night, sluice out your mouth with a solution of warm water and salt (try dissolving sea salt as opposed to using table salt). After you brush your teeth make sure you rinse your mouth thoroughly with clean water so you don't have toothpaste residues left.

Mouth ulcers often crop up if you're run down, stressed out etc. They then wear you out, making the whole thing worse. I sympathise, but the procedure outlined about may well work for you (and it wont kill you to try it).

I can relate to that, I've had a couple of stressed weeks at work and now have a mouth ulcer and have just started using bonjela - it takes a few days to take effect so you have to be patient.

The first to say is get Rinstead pastilles in the chemist. They are great for getting rid of the ulcers. Secondly why are you getting them. There could be a reason. Crohns disease/ ulcerative colitis(similar but not the same) amongst others causes ulcers. It might be worth checking this out with the doc. Dont worry it is not the end of the world even if you have these problems

I'm not sure why I'm getting them. I've noticed strange things about them though. For example, I don't seem to get them during relationships. But this might be psycological. I don't know. Weird

I find with bonjela when first applied it stings like a bítch for the first few seconds and then subsides into blissful numbness. AFAIK it contains a local anaesthetic (sp?).

I normally use some stuff called anbesol for my ulcers - hurts like hell, but does the trick.

When I get a particularly bad one I give it the three stage treatment - this almost always works.

    Basically :

    1. Rinse your mouth out with a cup of extremely salty water, repeat until cup is empty.
    2. Repeat this time with cup of dilute TCP.
    3. Apply ulcer stuff like Anbesol/Bonjela.

This is agony but usually seems to make them go away faster.

Feck bonjella, salty water and tcp get yourself some anbesol.

Tried the above 3 and none of them worked. Anbesol got rid of one in 2 days. Stings like feck at first but contains lydacane which numbs the pain.

    Chief.

Oral-B Bocasan is the one you need.

Havent tried anbesol so no comment there but the other methods described do not work.

Mix a bocasan sachet in warm water on a spoon, swish it in your mouth for 30secs and spit out. Do not rinse mouth afterwards. It hurts during the swishing as its attacking the ulcers and any gum disease you have !

I used to get alot of painful ulcers at the side/underside of tongue where they would rub against the teeth, hence very painful to even breathe through the mouth no mind talk.
Stress as described is major factor in getting ulcers as well as bad diet.

Ulcers usually come also from worn out toothbrushes which do not get all the bacteria from your mouth during brushing hence it builds up and infect your gums.

yer, bonjela is, among other things, a weak topical anaesthetic.

mouth ulcers can also be brought on by quitting smoking, due to the change in the bacteria inside your mouth which this leads to. i quit smoking last october and for a week and a half or so, got these long thin ulcers on the inside of my cheeks, like i had been sucking razor blades. not pleasent.
