That really depends on whether you are going to use it for it's intended purpose or not. A few friends of mine got larger versions of that USB device already, and it's a very elegant portable mass storage solution. If you intend to be bringing along your totally legal packages of linux to all your friends so you can share the love, then it's pretty much ideal for that. Otherwise, standard IDE/S-ATA drives are cheaper and offer comparable transfer rates.

I got the 200GB model from Komplett about a month or two ago. I connect to it using firewire on my laptop and slow old usb on my desktop. It's great for backups (comes with a copy of retrospect) but I use it mostly for storage of ISO's, downloads and anything I dont need with me on my laptop. Great drive and really sturdy.

As swiss said, if it's portable mass storage youre looking for, its great apart from the weight.

Thanks for the replys I think I will go ahead with the 160GB as the 120 does not have the firewire
    Cheers

i wouldn't reccomend Lacie to anybody. The shop I work in has stopped doing them.

We were getting a lot of returns. 60% rate! Sometimes the HD, which in fairness is not really Lacie's problem. But a lot of logic board problems, really irritating, serious data loss logic board probs.

Get the maxtor or a WD!

I wasnt aware of any reliability problems. I got a Lacie aluminium external HD recently and it's working fine - I decided on Lacie in preference to Maxtor because Maxtor were supposedly less reliable - from web searches at the time!

Just my 2c. I've found the Maxtors to be very reliable. We have three in work (2 x 250Gb and 300Gb firewire/USB2) and they fly! Never a problem and they get alot of use doing demos and the like.
