BMW Timing Belt or Chain?

1997 520i - Does it have a timing belt or timing chain? I was in the process of buying one but the salesman told me that he "snapped the timing belt when driving it". I have more than 1 reason to doubt him, the main one being that a mate I spoke to thinks that there shouldn't be a timing belt in that car. If it has a timing chain, is the chain likely to go?

The M52 engine was chain fitted and used in the early E39 520i, 523i & 528i cars. It should not break.
if you are buying a straight six or V8 engine made between 1996 and 1998 then also check for Nikasil wear. The easiest test is top start the car (pref. cold) and open the drivers door wide. It should NOT move. If it does then run away!
I recently bought a 523i and in my travels looking for a motor I saw a few affected by this.

Thanks kbannon. I had a quick look at the the details on that link but I have to admit that I'm engine ignorant. I know very little about under the bonnet. Is it highly likely that the nikasil issue will effect all cars with the engines that were highlighted at some stage or other?

It is a possiblility, a risk you have to take. Most cars will be fine but an occasional one comes up (like the two I saw recently). Listening to others who have suffered (mainly in UK) they generally have had the engine replaced by BMW for free (excl. fluids).
As I said, I bought a 523i recently and am not going to worry about it - just be careful when buying and make sure you get a warranty!!!
