My OEM LG GDR8161B dvd drive is apparently incompatible with Far Cry DVD and Painkiller. Any ideas what the hell I can do? Should I just buy a new DVD drive for my pc?

Try downloading patch 1.1 for Far Cry first

What difference will that make if I can not even install the game?

Well, you didn't specify the problem tbh. A lot people were having compatiblity problems with certain drives when they had it installed.

Maybe I should have said I couldn't install it as well.

Thanks for the suggestion all the same.

by "aparently", what do you mean? who told you? or is it just not working?

I think I heard some games couldn't install on certain DVD drives because of a fault with the disc :dunno:

Safedisc 3 apparently. It's to stop emulated drives.

May as well get a new drive, since more and more games will be on DVD.
I know that Dell, HP, Compaq etc used those LG Drives a lot, be interesting to see if others have the same problem.

I would whinge to Ubisoft and/or find a cracked version of the exe. Its not your problem that the drive doesnt work.

Have you checked to see if there are any firmware updates for the dvd drive? Have you done any google searches to see if theres any information out there on the problem you are having?

Here is something I discovered on the Amazon.co.uk site from doing a google search

--- WARNING TO USERS OF LG DVD DRIVES ---

If you own an LG DVD Driver, you may experience problems when loading the CD. Your drive may even refuse to read the cd all together. Don't panic, there is a fix available but it's difficult to install, as it involves updating the firmware of your DVD drive. May I suggest that if you own an LG DVD drive that you visit the official UBI Far Cry forums, where the issue is discussed and resolved. As of now, the direct link to the thread is,

Here's the firmware for your dvd-rom. Read throughly before trying as bad flash can destroy your dvd drive.

It's hilarious how anyone getting these two games as warez have no problems whatsoever installing and running, but the people who buy the games get screwed over. Genius.

Ye **** that. I am sorry, but i am buying them as I have money. I thought it would be nice to own the game too. From now on, it is Deviance all the way. **** UbiSoft. They make buggy games anyway.

PS: Thanks a million for the firmware updates. Amazing how I could not find it earlier. Cheers fellow boards members and neo and dub45 for links! it is greatly appreciated. Will do it tomorrow morning as I forget whether or not my DVD drive is a primary Master or a Secondary Master. I forget.

What the hell is your problem? You bitter bastard.

I could not find it. I asked for help. What is the problem with that? What do you think boards is for?

So you're only going to play games deviance create and release themselves? You won't be playing any Ubisoft games whatsoever? Including farcry?

Good on ya! I'm glad to see some people are willing to boycott companies that make crap games, and i fully support your decision to only play games Deviance make and release themselves. Let me know when they create their first game.

sorry about the off-topic-ness of this rant

But since i have one of these drives, thank god i found this out now. I would probably have ended p returning the disc and getting another one, as i would have assumed the disc was dodgy. That would have been a big waste of my time.
