After over a year of silence on the future of the STAR TREK feature film franchise, producer Rick Berman has finally dropped the first hints of a new theatrical project for the franchise. The news comes in the new issue of Dreamwatch magazine, just coming out in the UK.

Speaking in issue #117, Berman confirms for the first time that he is now developing a STAR TREK feature film project: "I am involved in the very early stages of what could be the next STAR TRKE movie," reveals Berman, in an excerpt provided by Dreamwatch. "It's something I will be producing with two other producers."

Unwilling to offer many details he cryptically describes it as "a prequel" without any further elaboration. The names of his producing cohorts will have to remain unknown for now, as well. This follows a report earlier this week from Dark Horizons that Paramount may be working on a project the site described as "Starfleet Academy." Coincidentially, former TREK producer Harve Bennett (STAR TREKs II-VI) revealed recently that several years ago he had pitched a Starfleet Academy-based STAR TREK movie concept.

On the television front, while the future of their first series remains in limo, Berman confirms that he is developing a non-STAR TREK sci-fi series with partner Brannon Braga. Both Berman and Braga have development deals with Paramount. If a new series begins development in earnest, TrekWeb insiders suggest Berman and/or Braga might take a reduced role in a fourth season of ENTERPRISE, though this is entirely speculation.

For the full interview and much more, check out issue #117 of Dreamwatch magazine in the United Kingdom.

    Intriguing to say the least

Dunno about that bizmark, if Harve bennett is one of the producers of this new film and its his idea there making it could be very good, in William Shatners movie memories book harve bennett went in depth into the story treatmnet for starfleet academy and it was very very good

well if it is harve bennetts Starfleet academy idea that there doing, then the storyline is as folllows

    ********
Its about a young kirk spock and mccoy and how they came together at starfleet academy and how they band together to go on there first against all odds style mission

Theres a pervading evil in the universe thats turning the youth of earth against the federation and this evil is building an army of these youths to attack the federation

Starfleet basically says to kirk that hes the only hope for the universe and off he goes with mccoy and spock to save the earth

During the story there is a great personal loss to kirk and it explains why he never again falls so deeply in love with a woman.

The treatment also deals with the prejudice against spock, and the aftermath that drove the wedge between his father sarek that lasts all his life

    **********

Now that is the first treatment of starfleet academy that was handed into paramount at the time of star trek 4 and 6 , this was the alternative to the voyage home at that time, but Paramount wanted to involve leonard nimoy and willliam shatner in some way to lend a sense of continuity to the film so the rerevised script which was actually green lighted by paramount until the suits put a stop to it in favour of a full blown classic cast adventure is this

    **********
Basically Spock and Kirk would appear at the beginning of the picture at the commencement ceremony for Starfleet academy, the over eager cadets would begin to ask questions about kirks time at the academy, kirk would say something along the lines "Well thats actually a very interesting story" Insert/fade to the story above
Now at the end of the story we find kirk
    ***********

Well if this is the story bermans talking about you dont want me telling you what happens in the end LOL, but i very much doubt berman is talking about Bennetts idea of Starfleet academy

Id like to see the film above, it would lend itself well to Kirk returning to trek in his own right rather than enterprise and it would give closure to the whole classic cast story, as it would have a beginning middle and an end

Mainly Starfleet Academy (the beginnning), TOS (Middle), Star trek 6 (the end)

    My 2 cents

Dreadful idea. I think they've forgetten what Trek is; or maybe I'm just not 'with it' anymore.

When I hear the 'Academy' idea I can't help but imagine some sort of god-awful 'Teen Trek' sh\te.

Good lord, that's back doing the rounds. Hardly "revealed" by harve, most of us probably remember this being toutes last time.

    Muppet Babies anyone?

Sounds like Berman wants to well and truly kill Trek so he can start on his 'new project' which will probably be 'Space Journey.'

OK, so I've defended Enterprise, despite not liking the series being set in the past.

I don't think ANY treatment/storyline for a Trek feature film set in the past will interest me at all. A young Kirk, Spock & McCoy?!
Younger versions of any established characters get a big fat *meh* from me

Is there ANYONE who likes the idea of a prequel?!

The only thing I'd be interested in is who'll they'll get to play the characters. And will Kirk have the same weird...way........oftalking!
