Most kernels prior to 2.4.23 / 2.6.0 don't support SATA. Debian's standard install kernel is 2.2.20 and there is a 2.4.18 kernel based installer on one of the disks but neither will support SATA.

If you can install on an ordinary Parallel ATA drive and build a kernel with an SATA supporting kernle then you would be able to move your install across relaitvely easily.

Alternatively, a guy called Scott Kveton has built an installer image for use with Debian and SATA:
    http://oregonstate.edu/~kveton/debian/

Check if it will work with your particular SATA chipset.
(I've never used this so I don't know how well it works)
