Peats - online robbers

Was looking to get a piece of computer equipment today so I checked out peats.com - the item I found was priced at €179. Did a search then on a couple of other online shops and found the same kit for €128!! All in Ireland and all presumably buying from the same source in Ireland.

I then did a random comparison of other items in peats and 3 other Irish sites which I've attached. Red is the most expensive, green is the cheapest, and yellow is the second cheapest.

Ask can be seen from this, peats are just "out of this world" LITERALLY. How on earth can they justify their prices.

As I said, it was just a random sample of items, but really is eye opening to see the differences.

I emailed Peats about the item I was looking for pointing out the price difference and I'm waiting on a reply but I won't hold my breath!

Ah now come on, that's just not right. Be fair to peats, they have a reputation to uphold.

They are well renowned offline robbers too.

A few people working in Peats post regularly here. What they've mentioned in the past is that the management aren't pushed about focusing on the website too much and mostly view it as a handy way of getting a little bit of extra business rather than marketing it properly, pushing the Irish aspect (which some people probably like) and having a situation where the site is as important to the business as the shop, which sounds like a poorly run marketing exercise for a web designer but it's perfect for a lot of what they sell.

Meanwhile the trouble with the shop (as with pretty much all other Irish shops) is that they're all stuck in the pre-Woolworths era, where it's better to make a hundred sixpences than a thosand pennies. Essentially, to put it in a simplistic way, they're still selling many of their shop products as premium items. And they're not going to lower their prices on the webpage while they aren't lowering them in the shop.

Compustore do the same thing though their web prices are often truly laughable.

Compustore is MUCH more expensive than Peats, IMO. Ugh, it makes me shudder to walk through there...I really feel very sorry for the poor middle-aged folk/country folk buying their kids a PC to use for college or school, they are being ripped-off that badly. At least buying from Dell or even in Currys or PC World you can find ok deals.

That said I am buying a PSU in Peats this weekend! Don't have good models on Komplett, pretty expensive for similar on Elara, and just too expensive and time-consuming to order the one I want from Jes-computer.de for the sake of 10 or 15 euro, plus if it is DOA returning it to Germany would be a real pain.

If Peats can survive using these prices why shouldn't it. They are out to make as much money as they can.

Just thinking about it, if I had to get a new hard drive or soundcard or whatever, I wouldn't even consider looking at any of the Irish sellers. Compared to getting your stuff from Germany or somewhere the prices here are just a joke, so I don't even bother looking.

The thing about Komplett though is that you can only get stuff delivered by courier (correct me if I'm wrong), so it tends to push up the final price.

www.hitide.ie is another good online irish shop
if they dont have what you want theywill pretty much order it for you, and you can pick up from them so no shipping...

I'm pretty amazed the likes of Peats *don't* compete seriously in the online sales stuff.

Komplet have an entire business based around it.

Well, they've never had too much in the way of competition on the street, so I guess it's just not in their mind-set to have to compete with other retailers.
