NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - For the first time, Japanese researchers have created a viable mouse via "virgin birth," or parthenogenesis -- that is, the offspring was derived solely from female genetic material contained in the mother's egg, without any contribution from a male animal.
    ...
The mouse pup (female, of course) grew to adulthood and was able to reproduce.

    Are we now redundant ?

you miss the point - if we don't have to do jobs for the women then they leave us alone !!! (If this doesn't make sense then just wait a few years)

leave you alone???? what exactly are ya talking about buzz... what kinda jobs do you get asked to do ???? and if women were to leave you alone wouldn't men as a species eventually die off????

Anyone see the news on RTE about this last night? Remember the scientist-type they interviewed about it, the one who was grinning like mad at the thought by the end of the report?

Am I the only one who thinks she hasn't had a date in years???

YES! No more will my drinking be disturbed by a phonecall "Are you in the pub ? whos there ? are you talking to other women ?"

This is the best news ever. We lost control of women long ago, now with this news they'll hopefully just ignore us.

Great, now if they'd just invent a spider vanisher, a screwdriver that comes with instructions, self-drilling walls and smaller wardrobes we can all stay in the pub!

Oh no, does that mean an endless supply of Messiahs? ;)

This sort of thing makes a nice experiment but you wouldn't want to use it as a method of reproduction in practice as you're rapidly narrowing the gene pool. (The offspring would have no recessive genes for one thing).

I already do a lot of the cooking washing and ironing, so I think I'll be OK. :D

As I told my gf last night, we can just round up all the women into cages, and harvest their eggs....poke them with sticks through the bars.

Our strength makes sure we'd never be removed.... :)

wow, one step closer to the "god" in the bible.
so does this mean religion is redundant now?

Play a game called "Who invented this?"

99.9% of the time it was a man. That's the end of that! :p

Also if you're going out for dinner make your wife/gf cook and just throw it out, stops her from getting rusty!

Doubtful. reproduction takes copies of genes from two donors for a reason.. to introduce changes in the child, just imagine what a tenth generation offspring with a female only bloodline would be like .. and while its mostly myth that incest will cause instant horrible mutations in the resulting child, after a few dozen generations it can introduce minor descrepancies without a wider genetic pool.. and in the case above where its just two copies of the mothers genes.. even worse :)

Ah Kali, you've just ruined the farcical nature of this thread with all your jargon and sensibleness.:p

Indeed, as this propagated over a few generations of females, genetic flaws and minor mutations would begin to appear, not to mention that the feotus would inherit every one of it's mother's flaws.

Bottom line: Without sexual reproduction, the human species cannot evolve, and therefore cannot survive. The entire point of two separate sets of chromosomes is so a new being is created with all the strongest charactistics of the two parents, thus furthering human evolution. There are exceptions to this rule, such as sex-linked genes, but mostly that's the reason we have, and need, two sexes.

Neither sex can ever be redundant.

No, no this is GOOD news. Why? Because using 2 eggs can only ever produce Women. So after a while, there are more women then men, and chances improve.

Plus, they're not just normal women, they're geneticly engineered women, so you're going to engineer them to look *good*
