Look at this. You'll find everything you want there.

All DVD's are copyright protected. You will need to use a few programs and a couple of steps to be able to copy a dvd and burn it. It will take some time do everything. Highly dependent on your cpu speed.

Most or all retail dvd's a dual layered..... hence the files being 8.2 gigs.

I use DVD Decrypter (Freeware) to decrypt/Verify/Copy the DVD onto the Hard drive.
    http://www.dvddecrypter.com/
Then I use Nero Recode 2 (Came with DVD burner) to squash the movie onto a
4.7 GB Disk. I've ripped about 30 DVD's from the video shop onto DVD +R using this system without any errors. No visible loss of quality on any DVD's.
This is just one method for doing it. There are probably numerous other ways of doing it.

Use dvd decrypter to copy a movie (even if it's copy protected) to your harddrive, then do your homework on a program called DVDShrink (it's very easy) which will compress the movie down to be just small enough to fit one disc. If it's too big you'll have to split it over two DVDs which the program can also do. Both programs are free
When burning you said u had choice of direct copy, audio CD or data CD..... why CD? your burning software should have DVD options, among them Video DVD, choose this and put all the files to be burnt into the video folder not the audio folder on it.

    hi,

check out afterdawn's guide , pretty fool proof and have used it loads. this can be used wether the dvd is dual layered or not as for single layered you just use less compression. also get some dvd covers.

as for media, i suggest using "Ritek g-04" ones, preferrably the orange top ones that come in tub. they have rerlatively good prices at pcn.ie

i use this setup and have backed up loads of my dvd's , and not 1 dvd has failed while burning. the general concensus on some forums (wow that soundsa nerd!) is to use ritek media.

got any q's or problems just pm me!

dvd decrypter and dvd shrink are all you need for dvd to dvd-r copies. both very simple to use and both free. don't spend too much time looking for alternatives because they either won't be completely free, or they will be a lot more complicated than you need, and will only confuse you more.

keep it simple, those two tools do the job, menu's and all, so no problem.

I use AnyDVD with CloneDVD. Works well for me.

I use DVDShrink to shrink down dvd discs directly.

Is it better to use DVD decrypter first?

it could be but Its easy with shrink and the quality is grand any way.

check the guide (link in my post) it can be used on alldvd's just means the compression isn't on if the dvd is already a fine size

    You need 3 programs.

1/DVDDecryptor will rip the original DVD to your DVD.

2/You need DVD2one to compress the film so it'll fit on a DVD-/+R (see note below)

3/You need Nero to burn the resultant Vob & info files to DVD.

Note: Most retail DVD's are dual layered (approx 9GB). DVD-/+R's are single layered (4GB approx) hence the need to compress your data. However some retail DVD's are single layered discs. You can backup these discs with DVDDecryptor - 1-1 copy.

The above 1-3 steps are simplified and you can use programs other than the ones listed. For detailed guides I would highly recommend http://www.dvdrhelp.com/
