    Nice rig

Notting like the warm fussy feeling you get from building your own pc :)

How much did it set you back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭El_MUERkO

I've actually been building it over the last 7 months buying a bit at a time so its all spread out but about €1400 I'd say, I'm sure you could do it cheaper now, still its blisteringly quick with the biggest speed up coming from using the drives in RAID 0 which makes windows fly.

sweet. i've got the silver version of that case & i just got a side panel for it last week (€5 in komplett's easter sale:D )
think i'll get some kind of cold cathode light for it next...

Having problems with that TwinMos DDR?

I had too put it up to 2.7v to get it to pass memtest in dual channel mode but it seems to be running steady now, havent really stressed it yet other than playing a bit of the joint ops demo that uesabout 350 megs.

Pushed the gfx card ram up to 324 and got 42044 on aquamark last night.

hmmm...not nearly as drastic then as the problem i'm having with another rig using same dual DDR on a Abit NF7 v2.0 The system just does not seem to like one of the sticks. I get blue screen on boot (WinXP Pro) and sometimes a NEE-NAW warning sound after system shuts down. This happens in all combinations of dual channel, all the time with one particular BUT only at certain times with the other stick.

I've ruled out the other bad stick as a lost cause but the system does run on the other good stick. It only seems to shut down when

    (a) playing any game (at any stage of runtime, pretty random)
    (b) burning cd-r

    .....great aint it :dunno:

anyway probably should start a seperate thread I'm onto overclockers.co.uk to try and RMA these things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭El_MUERkO

I had to send one of my sticks back to komplett when I ran memtest on the stick I kept it was fine but the other spat out 1000s of errors.

    RMA the bugger

Also make sure your running the latest bios and driers for the mobo.

Its the nForce2's memory thingy's fault, they're really picky, I though I'd have to sell mine but they seem ok now.

    El_MUERkO

I have a non pro ati9800 card also. Have been running my card at 380core * 324 ram since i got it. When i push the ram any higher it does not like it. Dont realy want to push my core any higher as i still have the same fan that came with the card on it.

If you get a chance could your run benchmark 2001 and tell me what you get. I have almost the exact same rig as your self apart from the ram.

I'll aqumark when i get the chane and let you know what socre ill get.

Will do, have to get a copy of 3dmark but i think i have one on a disk, do you want me to clock back to 380 or run as is?

Gave memtest a go on both sticks seperately, one seems to be fine, no errors. The other actually shuts down the system during the test. Did'nt show any errors i think before this, and i don't know what that means but it outlook is grim.

Have tried alot of the latest BIOS's for this mobo but all to no avail.

Also, trying to find someone through phone in that overclockers.co.uk that will RMA this stuff is about as easy as locating a virgin pornstar tbh.

Yeah clock back just for the test if you can Ta.

    My system is

Amd 2500Barton "if yours is an xp and not a barton version chip then i would have a slight advantage"
Abit nf7 v2-S "Not the same motherboards but i dont think it should make a whole lot of differince"
    Maxtor HD
    Ati9800 non pro

erm... aren't the xp's barton core?

    /edit
    from 2500+ onwards, i mean

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭El_MUERkO

Will clock back and try it tonight if I get a chance.

I think the non Barton XPs went up as far as 2700 on a 266 fsb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,614 ✭✭✭BadCharlie

Ok now i have got 16,200 in 3dmark 2001 thats the best score i have got.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,761 ✭✭✭Col_Loki

    from 2500+ onwards, i mean

Well these days yea thats true when your buying a new chip. The Tbreds (256k L2 cache) went up to Xp2800+ running at 2.25ghz 333mhz FSB.

2500's were only made as bartons so it has to be the same chip ;)

PS Nice PC El_MUERkO , why dont you pop a pic into the case sticky ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭El_MUERkO

I got 17098 on 3dmark01 SE with the 330 patch just now.

Will post some pics when I get the chance.

    [edit]

Just ran it again with the GPU clocked back to 384 and got 17007.

    Still havent got 3dmark03 yet.

Thats 800 points more then me feck..........
    Must try again :)

    hi,

i might be wrong but isn't raid just a mirroring thing for servers and back up?

and how does it benefit a standard home / gaming pc?

cause i have it on my asus board and wantto know the benefit of it before i shell out and get another 160gb sata.

    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,761 ✭✭✭Col_Loki

There are different types of raid. Raid 1 is mirroring and is more for data security than anything else (ie if one hard drive dies the info is on the other).

The Raid0 (stripped) Increases your hard disk performance (alot) as the information is shared equally between the two hard drives. Ie when you are retrieving a number of files both hard disks will be sending info at the same time and thus its faster (simplified version of what happens).

But Raid0 is the way to go, make sure you get same drives....

2 identical drives, you'll have to totally wipe and start again, setting it up is easy as pie, once its up then BAM everything ****ing flys I'm still amazed how quickly everything loads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

yea, I got to build a PC with 2x 36GB raptors a while back. It was a ripper!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭neokenzo

I'm using RAID0 and I think its makes the hdd faster than having it seperate. However it does come with a risk. If your hdd has a bad sector or you need to install a new hardware, you have to set up the RAID array again. Which can be a pain. I have had my RAID array broken twice due to overclocking my rig a tad bit too much and all the data was gone because I had to set up the RAID again. But you can of course image your RAID to prevent this. Other than that, RIAD certainly rocks IMO.

I'm now very intrigued about setting up RAID0....what do i need besides another identical harddrive? Heard about a RAID controller....is that software or more hardware?

Get the hardware and not the software. Its better. You will obviously need SATA wires or adapters. Thats all I guess.

Does it only work with SATA?

Ok. Cheers for that....probably have to put it on the back burner so! Have to get the old overdraft into at least some pretense of order....

Actually I was wrong, you can use IDE for RAID as well. My bad. Sorry.
